Photog's Vests - Anyone using?

POTD.com.au - 18 May 2006 11:45 GMT After one of my "full" 2GB CF cards was found on the ground out near Moree (as we were leaving for the 5-6 hour trip home), I have decided that stuffing things into my jeans pocket is not such a good idea.
So I am considering a vest. Yes that means I will be stuffing things in pockets again, but this time it won't be with keys and handkerchiefs etc.
Is anyone using one? If so, what type? Did you get a real photog's vest or did you go with a combat or flight vest of some kind? Any advice appreciated, ta! :-)

Haven't had a chance to use it yet, (and as per my post tonight in r.p.e.35mm it will be a while before I do), but I am keen to, as it looks it extremely handy. My work colleagues though described it quite succinctly as a "w.nker vest". I don't care.

BenF - 18 May 2006 13:56 GMT Yeah i was gonna suggest a fly fishing vest... I own 3 (for fishing), ive never used them for my photography but they'd be pretty much the same thing as a photographers vest. Probably alot cheaper too.
And yeah, some of them have the fluffy wool patch over the breast to hook loose flies on, and some of them dont!! If you got one with, u could just take it off anywayz. You can get the thin meshy type ones, which would be better in summer, but you can also get the thicker wool padded inside ones which are great for winter.
Then just buy a canon or nikon iron-on patch and off ya go LOL :)

Actually, anyone who actually uses the term "photog" (or worse - "lensman") is over-qualified in the gratuitous auto-eroticism stakes anyhoo.

Mine keeps me warm as well as keeps all females at bay... or is it that thick gold chain and pendant (either way the wife seems to be happy that I come home every night)

mark.thomas.7@gmail.com - 18 May 2006 13:28 GMT Yep. But I went to a *fishing* shop, and bought a no-brand open-mesh thing with lots of pockets that works wonderfully, cost bugger-all, and is *cool* in summer.

I had a look at fishing ones today, but they were all the short type.... it seems that fisherman like to stand in water up to their chest??? go figure?
I ended up grabbing one online a few minutes ago (needed retail therapy and couldn't wait) I really liked the Nikon one I found, but it was too expensive.... the Canon was well priced but it had stuff all pockets..... so I went the middle of the road with this.... http://www.procameragear.com/pics/combatBlackFront3.jpg

mark.thomas.7@gmail.com - 18 May 2006 14:03 GMT What? You never shoot in water up to your waist? Where's your sense of adventure!
(O:
And yes, that one looks nicely sensible and sort of..'understated'.. Nice choice!
POTD.com.au - 18 May 2006 14:30 GMT > What? You never shoot in water up to your waist? Where's your sense > of adventure! Funny you should say that, as while looking at fishing vests, I did see the waders and though "now they would be handy"
Many a time I have pulled up at the waters edge cause it was a bit "iffy". I dont mind water that I can see the bottom, but that weedy sh.t is not for me. (what a girl!! lol)
> (O: > > And yes, that one looks nicely sensible and sort of..'understated'.. > Nice choice! Bushy Pete - 18 May 2006 15:11 GMT I bought a cheap $35.00 fishing one from BCF. It is Kokoda brand made in China, but the XXL size fits well and allows a bit of room for wearing open over the top of whatever I'm wearing, or under a jacket for a wedding.
It has a heap of pockets for all sorts of things that seal well and the fishhook patch is held on with the same colour velcro as the vest.
Hope this helps, Peter

Maybe I should unpick the Maxell, replace it with Canon and sell it on ebay. Although it did get no bids. Hmmm... thinking back on the way my co-workers described it as a w.nker vest...

HC - 20 May 2006 01:00 GMT G'day
As one of my other hobbies is dressmaking and machine embroidery, I've made a couple of vests.
Firstly there is a safety vest for those times I might need to wander near the road, it's flouro and also has reflective stripes, great for speedway so an out-of-control car can line you up in his sights!! ;-)
Next is a polar fleece vest for winter, and a light weight one for summer use. All have enclosed pockets to hold those precious CF/MD cards as well as lens caps, and each one has some photog related embroidery. I have embroidered matching caps as well.
I also use an EOS branded CF/MD soft wallet that I bought on eBay from the US, it has a velcro belt loop on the back and holds a few cards.
If anyone wants something specific made-to-measure give me a yell and we'll see what can be worked out. If you just want your logo embroidered on a cap/vest/etc I can most likely do that too.

HC - 22 May 2006 04:53 GMT Dresses?? Nah, don't do those often. I've just finished converting a hiker's backpacker to a photog's backpack complete with lens socks and battery holders etc. Think I must be going crazy(er)!!

Joan - 22 May 2006 11:06 GMT I thought blokes did the sowing and the girls do the sewing.

SRC - 22 May 2006 12:31 GMT After 20 years of being a press snapper, I think I have finally found something along the lines of what I should have been using years ago. The day in, day out of bag carrying is all but gone (except when going on larger assignments). It really has taken it's toll on ones back, and after trying for the last few years to find the "ideal" combination of gear, bag, vest or belt type pack, I think I may be getting all that much closer to the perfect thing. Have a look at this link http://www.combatclothing.com.au and go to the "load bearing vests" section......or copy this whole link into your browser http://www.combatclothing.com.au/cgi-bin/cp-app.pl?usr=50X6083291&rnd=107584&rrc =N&cip=203.206.90.30&pg=prod&ref=74&cat=6&catstr=HOME:6 At least with this, gear is close at hand, it is off your hips or waist making running a whole lot easier, and it has a great cross over type of strapping around the neck and across the back making it very supportive. The wearing of a vest in the tropics here, sometimes became too hot (I know there are mesh ones, just havent tried them really), but after trialling this chest webbing vest, seems to work fine. The other beauty of it is the fact that we are in and out of a car all day long going from job to job, so lifting bags into boot or undoing a belt harness constantly and putting back on also gets a bit much. This vest means you can get into a car and still keep it on, only having to then pick up a camera body or two. As I have said, I have only had a trial fitting so far, the vest arrives in a day or so, so will be only too happy to let people know how it goes after I give it a good road testing over the next week or so. Cheers SRC Townsville
POTD.com.au - 29 May 2006 04:17 GMT My "w.nker vest" ;-) arrived today and I must say that I am quite impressed. It will be well suited to carry gear when trudging around bush.... or the V8 Supercars for that matter.
I have found and Australian relailer of these vest now and the $53 that I got mine for is looking rather good, with the local price being $79.50 plus delivery.

Now to find a wholesale supplier so I can add them to my POTD merchandise. ;-)
