I'm looking for a photo lab in Melbourne that people can recommend
for quality digital printing in larger formats up to 40x50cm (16"x20"
in the old money).

The catch is that the images I want to print are in B&W, and any colour
casting
will ruin the images.  I'd prefer to use a good quality paper&dyes as
the prints will be framed.

Can anyone recommend a lab or service that knows how to do
decent B&W in this larger format ?

Thanks in Advance.
Shane.

G'day Hydro

Do you have a phone number for Dave R who runs the local telescope? I
believe it's open on Wed and Sun nights and I'm interested in visiting
tomorrow night.

I don't expect you to post his phone number here, so you can reply by
email if you wish?

Thanks Peter & Hydro.

I'm assuming that because you've both simply sent links, that you've
been
happy with the services from these companies for this sort of work.

The nulabs site seems to be oriented to people making a living out of
photography, as opposed to (crazy?) amateurs like me who seem to just
burn cash (and maybe have some fun) is that a fair assessment ?
The Image Science site appears to offer a versatile service, are they
expensive ?

Regards & Thanks again,
Shane

do you want a one off service or just send the CD off and the prints
come back or do you want to upload your images?

Hi Hydro,
I'm happy to upload the images, send off a cd or drop around to the
site,
thats not so much a concern for me.

I'm more interested in things like getting the paper quality right,
and getting the tonal range out of the images like I would have in
the "bad old darkroom days". (I'm a newly returning dinosaur after a 10
year break that used to have a darkroom and now am hooked on the digital
format)

Regards,
Shane.

Shane, my favourite lab isn't into Melbourne, but I've had some
good results from http://www.imt.net.au/imt/digitaloutput.aspx.
If you're a professional photographer with an ABN their rates
are not too bad. (See the downloadable PDF on the lower right
of this link). They do a nice metallic print as well.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll now add IMT to the list with
Image Science, Nulab and Vanbar. I'll probably end up going for a
Melbourne lab as I think the next step after checking out the websites

will be to go in and have a chat and see how helpful the staff are.

BTW I need to declare my ignorance, I've no experience with metallic
prints,
can you point me to some good examples ?

Regards and
Thanks again to all who've given helpful replies,

Shane.

Shane --

You need to have a print in front of you -- onscreen examples won't work.
It's a standard photographic print with a metallic sheen.
IMT do them on Kodak Professional Endura paper. Info --

I've been very happy with my prints from NuLab (www.nulab.com.au
IIRC), including a couple of largish (16x14") B&W prints. They also
offer a metallic paper that looks really good on B&W prints.

Thanks to everyone for the excellent advice.

In the end I have settled for a local company,
Image Science http://www.imagescience.com.au/index.html

I have found the advice from Jeremy at Image Science to be very helpful

and the quality & service has been excellent.

Cheers,
Shane.
