The Olympus website isn't a great deal of help. I take it there are
several different series, H and M. Can anyone knowledgeable about them
offer a quick explanation of the differences please ?

for a compatibility table, and from Wikipedia (so who knows whether it
is of any value)...

The Type M was released in 2005. It uses Multi Level Cell (MLC)
architecture to achieve higher storage capacity than the 512MB.
Although Type M capacity will eventually stretch to 8GB, the 1GB card
is currently the only card in this range. The Type M suffers some
compatibility issues with older cameras (especially video recording)
and marginally slower readwrite speeds than the 512MB card. More
recently Type H cards were introduced which do not seem to offer
significant speed improvements.

Wrong.

I have a 512mb Type M XD card in front of me at the moment.

Can you explain *why* that makes it wrong?  The article states that the
M type uses a particular achitecture to achieve storage capacities
*over* 512.  That indicates to me that it simply uses a *less* complex
achitecture for memories *below and up to* 512.  So you could, in fact,
have an M type card in front of you for anything from 8Mb to 8Gb...

I'm not saying that the article is necessarily 100% correct, but your
claim doesn't seem to be any indication it is wrong...

How can he have a 512MB Type M card if they are only in 1GB?

Cards smaller than or equal to 512MB weren't excluded from Type M.  The
article stated that MLC allowed Type M to acheive greater than 512MB up to
8GB, but curently only one card exisited in this range ... no mention of how
many exisited in the 512MB or smaller but nothing mentioned which excludes
512Mb or smaller from being in the type M class.

Depends what you mean the word range to mean. The type M range or the
range above 512 up to 1GB.

If you read it the first way, then it appears to be a contradiction, the
second it doesn't.

I couldn't believe they would put this image on their website
http://www.olympusimaging.com.au/servlet/BlobServer?blobcol=urlxlargeimage&blobh
eader=image%2Fjpeg&blobkey=id&blobtable=ProductImageFile&blobwhere=1117688189068

I know it isn't caused by the camera but it still isn't a good ad for
their products.

They cannot show the unpixelated face until the end of it's trial.

Or they didn't get a model release.
