Megapixels gone mad

Look out wallet - I've just seen some pretty amazing stuff, straight from a
39 Mp back for Hasselblad by Phase One.  If peering at your monitor and
zooming, zooming, zooming into ridiculous detail is your thing, then you'd
better start saving for one of these babies.  From memory, such a back
retails for about $44k, so just over a grand a megapixel (or roughly 1000
pixels per dollar [ exactly 886pix/$1]).

Of course to justify such a beast, you have to have the right kind of glass
so maybe double that amount.  With such HUGE files (about 40Mb per RAW
file), storage on the run becomes an issue, solved with the right hunks of
cash of course.  Keeping the whole thing steady requires sufficient rigidity
in a tripod... make that tripods and so chuck a few of them in too.  You'll
need a very large laptop with tons of RAM and a generator to use it on
location in southern Vietnam or Galapagos Island.  Damn, now you have too
much to carry, so hiring a few assistants is necessary.  Need to get to
locations quickly?  Easy - Gulfstream V...

....aaaaaaagggghhhh, it's driving me crazy.  Why aren't I the head of some
bank/corporation/mafia organisation...???

Back to my little 6.1Mb D100 and the handful of film bodies for a while for
me I think.  The next step could be the Xpan and a suitable medium format
scanner (and Gulfstream V of course).  :-)

Cheers,
Dave E (...twitch twitch)

You have gone mad, PhaseOne is not part of Hasselblad (but Imacon has merged
with Hassy!)
and I am sure they will follow suit.

as far as I know we can expect up to around 80mpix for Medium format (645
size chips)

:-)

Hehe - yes, you are right.  However, it was a Phase One back on a 'Blad.
Honest, cross my heart...  :-)

Aaaaagh - yikes.  How much RAM would I need then???

Damn!

Cheers,
Dave E
(I think I'll just stick to the Gulfstream plan.)

You can start by getting those Kodak 16mpx back.
Quite affordable already :)
or since you own a D100, might as well get a D2x for the time being.

Not so sure about that one.  I'm currently having a bit of a film love
affair and so that will naturally bear me a scanning device, which will then
provide an avenue to justify some medium format gear... hmmm

Today's foray into some boy's toys shops found me a wonderful new idea in
the shape of an Epson 4800.  I am already planning the space (vast amounts
of it) required to position it next to my server...  more learning curve,
more novelty value, more consumable costs....

Hmmm, exactly what part of all that is not the same as hauling around
a MF film camera and all its gear, tripods, film, etc?

Ah yes: the bit about the 40Mb RAW file.

High resolution is a great equalizer, isn't it?  :)

and the tripod!  And wait until you get into the wonderful
world of drum film scanning and you realize you need
TWO mafia jobs!

Indeed.  In recent travels across China, I hauled 2 bodies, tons of Velvia,
7 Nikkor lenses, one carbon tripod, a laptop, extra hard drives, batteries
a-plenty and other 'necessary' accessories around.  Almost didn't have room
for silly incidentals like clothing etc.  (Next trip add an XPan.)  :-)

Last year I almost dropped the lot in southern Vietnam crossing streams by
walking on very narrow boats.  Would have made a great picture I'm sure -
thankfully the pleasure didn't eventuate.

Lord knows how I'd go with MF stuff.

Indeed.  However, I suspect one would do well to ask the question "how much
resolution do I really need?".  Of course this is like saying "my bike/car
has enough power".  Noone in their right mind believes such a statement.

Indeed.  Those Imacon scanners (pseudo drum) are verrrrrry tasty.  Are we
all afflicted with such desires?

Yes - I suspect you know exactly what I'm talking about here!

Cripes, you're nearly as bad as I am!
I haul the f4, the fe2, 3 nikkors, 1 tamron, 1 rb67 and 180 lens
and a monster kenett benbo tripod.
Ah yes: overseas, I take the Canon video as well.
Folks around here know me as the nutter with the big
shoulder bags around the Northern beaches and parks
every weekend with good weather...

Exactly.  V8s rule, I'm afraid!  ;)

Worse, much worse, than chook flu...

Yeah.  That's why we all NEED to get that 180 f2.8:
everything helps.

And the more ppi that scanner does, the more
it can see into microscopic stuff...

"they" being those who don't have one!  :-)

Dave, buy postcards at the airport and leave the cameras at home :-)
