Is "reducing noise" in a digital picture the same as "sharpen"?

I'm not an expert on the matter but from what I
know of the subject I'd say: most definitely not.

absolutely not!

:-)

See www.neatimage.com  for one of the better digi noise removers.  and see
http://www.neatimage.com/examples.html for examples of noise and noise
reduction by the program.  But a word of warning, used with a heavy hand it
can produce the plastic barbie doll pics that only ever used to be
acheivable after years of studying airbrush techniques.  Sometimes it looks
good, but it's become an oh-so-common look these days

best to just get rid of the noise with it rather than go beserk

and it it also has sharpening algorithms onboard for those who *do* want to
sharpen - the results are stunning (work the sharpenning in the Y channel)

oops, meant to add that Polaroid dust and scratch removal tool (free from
polaroid.com ) also does a pretty reasonable job of removing noise

Thanks for the reply, and to others who replied.

So how is noise reduced during manipulation in some kind of software?

I was reading a review of the Panasonic DMC-LX1 at
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasoniclx1/ which stated that the camera
had excess noise.

However reading elsewhere a user's review, this noise issue was minimised,
because the user said it could be handled with software manipulation.  How?
What software?

Neat Image, but the Panasonics really suffer badly at higher ISO's, they
should have used larger sensors.

Agreed. My 2MP FZ2 does very well at 100iso though, and the lens is awesome.

In its simplest form, noise removal is actually a blur. Sharpening
emphasises noise.
