Creating the safest electronic family album with which program?

Maybe someone here would know or maybe suggest where I can ask this
question.

Would it be best to show photos and captions in a MS Word document and
archive the family album this way for future generations to easily access?

Advantages I see -
Can be easily printed as a paper copy of the album,
Can be password protected against accidental alteration,

Disadvantages -
Word document file size will be big

So, MS Word or some other program?
Thanks

I'm sure you'd do well to find a reasonable HTML album maker and go down
that path.  A simple one comes standard in ACDSee if you use that.  From
there you can "webise" the album and make it available to the whole world if
you like!  :-)

Certainly Word is not likely to be the best option - especially the way it
handles embedded images.

Just my humble opinion,

I find that Google's Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/) works well for
organising images into albums on your local machine, and as of the last
update, it suppors several different RAW formats, which is a plus.  It
doesn't store your images anywhere (they are left on the filesystem),
so the requirement and process for backing up to your photos to a DVD
etc is not altered.  It does have a backup facility, so you are able to
restore images to Picasa in the event of a HDD failure.  IMO it is the
best PC album software - at least that I've tried (much better than
something like Adobe Photo Album) - and it's free...

If you want to generate a HTML photo album website, Gallery
(http://gallery.menalto.com/) works very well, but it is not simple
process...  It uses PHP, which will require your PC to be running
server software (which is not overly recommended without a nice
firewall), but it does allow you to access and display the EXIF data.

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks for your lengthy responses. ACDSee, Albumatic and Picasa look very
interesting.
