I emailed Photocontinental, among others, to get a quote for my new minolta
7D.  They beat the price of all of those internet stores, Ted's and Camera
House.  Trust me, I checked by doing almost 3 months of research to buy this
camera.  Short of buying on Ebay, they should beat any other quoted price
you put to them and I found their service to be more than reasonable.
Dirtcheap is nowhere near their namesake, at least in terms of the 7D I
bought. In fact they were one of the most expensive at the time.
Hope that helps.

PC now has on on-line shopping cart too!!  ...although it has no payment
module :-(   But it does show price and if stock is available.  Once you
complete the cart, they will contact you to arrange payment and delivery.

One thing to note is that PC has always been flex with their prices in the
past, so perhaps avoiding the shopping cart and doing a bit of email/phone
haggling may be of benefit? :-)

This is exactly what I found out.  The prices they have on the website are
way over what I paid and they even sweeten the deal with offering lower
prices for things you might be interested in buying.  I also got a vertical
grip with the 7D for $150.....that's about $100+ less than what they or
others actually state it costs on their respective websites.  So I was more
than happy.

Photo Continental is the camera supplier of choice for nearly every
Professional photographer in Queensland. Why? Because they care. At some
point in the evolution of camera sales, this firm discovered they were
losing major business to the likes of Dirtcheap cameras.

They must have decided then, that being Camera dealer of the year wasn't
enough in itself to fight off the threat from online stores. They are
very price competitive.

I bought 2 Canon lenses from them last year and returned both (within a
week) because they didn't live up to my expectations. No problem... took
'em back for a full credit, no questions asked.

I bought some E300 Olympus cameras from them a few weeks ago. I saved
over $400 on the price at Harvey Norman. That'd be a first but it's
true. I wouldn't bother going elsewhere. Just tell 'em Russell sent you
and they are bound to give you a great price!

Specifications are good to read but
When it comes to judging Digital Cameras...
I'm in the "how do the pictures look" category.

I have seen many times that Harvey Norman is NOT the cheapest place to
buy photographic or computer equipment. They may be OK with specials but
for brand-name items in either category you can nearly always buy
cheaper somewhere else.

Remember that their prices include a component to pay for their
extensive (expensive!) TV advertising.

I think he meant that he saved $400 by shopping at PC's compared to the
price quoted by Harvey Norman.

not to mention.... HN woul dnot generally give a crap about photogrpahy
other than moving boxes..... at least you know you are speaking with an
enthusiast at stores such as photo continental.

Before long we will all be buying via mail order, but nobody will b e
left to answer any slightly tough questions.... saved 5 dollars though!

PC's web prices are not the cheapest, correct. It is the matched price
quotes I asked for that were the cheapest.  They wanted to openly compete
when asked if they would do so. This may not be the experience with more
expensive cameras', but it was my own experience with them and that's what I
offer out to anyone else who cares.

I've been most impressed with Centre.net.au. The prices are good and the
service excellent. They delivered when the said they would and have been
very helpful when I had a problem - 10 out of 10 so far

True, but keep in mind they are grey importers, if local warranty is a
concern for you.

Many of these places including camerfarm, dirtcheap and Centre.net.au. have
a pretty limited range of accesories, etc for some cameras.

The following lists and compares prices daily -

http://www.ozpriceguide.com/subcategory.asp?SubCatID=12

I dunno if it lists the camera you are looking for though.

> and which are the better ones to deal with?

I can't help you on that.

Cheers.

www.staticice.com.au  is quick and dirty for an overview of the market, not
just camera gear.

Have firsthand positive experience with Dirtcheap and Quality Camera Sales
(WA).

Price alone is not the ONLY decision factor though.

Did the rounds of the stores in Perth a couple of weeks ago, in pretty much
every shop their idea of a good deal was a $5discount off an item or $10 if
you wanted to buy a couple of $250 items and they would have to get it
shipped in. Pathetic really.
