Jeff - 22 Oct 2005 08:12 GMT Hi
For sometime I have been looking at buying a new storage device for use while away from my computer. Does the new Ipod, Creative Zen Vision or PSP put a new slant on picture storage? I know Vision is not available here yet, but i am waiting for an os trip.
cheers Jeff

[BnH] - 22 Oct 2005 12:53 GMT Just wondering how are you going to use PSP as a storage device ? The largest MS Duo Pro is only 2 GB and they cost much more !?

I-pod look slike one of the better options I've seen. There are however devices with built in card readers.... although I have not looke dinto the available apple accssories.
Apacer have a unit which burns direct to dvd and cd
One issue I have heard can be a problem with some portable storgae devices is compatability with various card readers and and detecton issues if drivers are required. ie no built in reader, just usb
Pete D - 25 Oct 2005 08:27 GMT Have a look at the Vosonic 6230, impressive.

dvdude - 23 Oct 2005 04:02 GMT Are you looking for photo storage only? Or dual use as an MP3/,media player? If it's storage only, then look at proper dedicated devices such as the Vosonic range, or the CompactDrive PD70X.

I am looking for dual use, the idea of a MP3 while travelling so I don't have to cart CD's around is appealing and so is storage so I don't have to carry my notebook around.

Speed in transferring a 1GB card in about 2 mins, and convenience in having AA rechargeables as a power source. For my situation, speed is everything.

Yep.... if you are a bulk shooter and regularly fill up 1Gb+ cards speed is everything and mp3 becomes unimportant.
Thankfully though, we are now starting to see highspeed transfer and lifestyle features combined...... I think the XDrive VP6230 is one example.

I think the XDrive VP6230 is one > example. I looked at the XDrive VP6230, the cheapest at $399 for only 1 year warranty. It appears not as rugged or well built as the Ipod and Mrobe etc. Maybe I am judging this as an inferior item as it kind of looks it. !? Also at least with electronics I purchase from major stores, I can purchase an additional 3 year warranty. Please give me some feedback on your experience.
[BnH] - 24 Oct 2005 13:04 GMT Xdrive and other photo banks was NEVER meant for mp3 playback. It is shoot , pull out your CF , reload with your 2nd-ary CF , keep shooting , ask your assistant to copy the CF , after 5 mins .. the 2GB card is ready again. Then store the photo bank back in the bag .
I don't know what you shoot and how you shoot it, but a day assignment with a 8mpx camera easily took 6 GB storage [when you shoot RAW also :)] Then after a day shooting I believe you won't be in a mood to listen to your favourite top 1000 music. If you are asking, why they come in 40GB size as minimal ? well .. coz there is no < 40 GB around.
Well .. me and a few fellow photographer I know at least.
ipod n mRobe ? they are walkmans.

If a unit offers the storage capacity and transfer speed required for photographic needs, PLUS also offers the ability to preview your images, play a movie or let you listen to some MP3s and does all this at a price that is on par, why shouldn't we go that way? I know I would sure use it, as sometimes I will drive 1200k's for a shoot and campout for a week. Having some entertainment for those non taking pix times is rather nice.

Having some entertainment for those non taking pix times is rather > nice. Yes, i agree. I am not a professional photographer, no need for an assistant. I enjoy taking photos when i am hiking, fishing or just enjoying the great outdoors. I just enjoy photography so my needs are different. 20 gig would be heaps for me. I do not want to take my notebook with me when i go away hiking, camping or fishing, so the convenience of having a storage device and MP3 is more important to me than .
[BnH] - 25 Oct 2005 16:24 GMT > Why can't they be both? <-- they can, but I won't use them at the same time.

And if I go photo hunting, normally I go in group or at least in pair. So at least someone will know if I pass out in the middle of nowhere + we chat to kill the waiting game.

h.fang - 28 Nov 2005 22:09 GMT I've been using XDrive VP-2060 for 4 years with no problems at all. Originally it came with a 20 Gig Hardrive. I recently upgraded it to 60 Gig.

the XS drives, now 4 years old are still going strong and some Epson units with screens (not sure which models, I'm not there anymore) have been added to the collection at great expense
I bought an XS myself too
lovely units.
After I left the employ of tafe I worked at a retail shop where they had a bad rep, and the shop had 4 units which were supposedly 'broken'. All plugged in, fired up and performed faultlessly. Seems all the users had Macs and maybe it was an OS issue..
All were later sold on with no complaints from the new owners :)

David_MC - 22 Oct 2005 15:22 GMT Or you can find similar like I-pod with built in card reader already.
I bought Vosonic vp623 and love it very much. We can watch movie in the plane and preview the pictures before deleting the card to ensure all images been transfered succesfully.
I bought it from this store http://www.jaldigital.com.au/catalog/default.php?cPath=27
They sell few different types as well so you can choose whatever it suits you.
Regards, Dave

Bassam Islam - 25 Oct 2005 08:42 GMT I just got a Creative Zen Vision (it is out in the US), and it works very well. It has 30GB of storage space, and can hold and display Audio, Video, and Pictures, either on the screen or on a TV with the included A/V cables. It also has a CF slot that can be used with digital cameras to view the pictures on the LCD screen (which has a resolution of 640x480 pixels), and can even transfer the pictures of the CF card and onto the hard drive, clearing up the card for more pictures. If your camera uses a memory format other then compact flash (e.g. memory sticks or SD cards), then adaptors are available for not too much money. The Zen Vision is $400, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

Sounds good, was that $US 400?
