I was looking at getting a calendar of my favourite pictures made up for my
family & friends (say 10 or so copies). Has anyone done this and can
recommend who to use, and exactly whats involved? I was thinking something
along the lines of  A4 sized with the photo on each page taking up half
that... any suggestions welcome!

Technology Australia Pty Ltd (my company)
at Cleveland Queensland do that. We make wire bound calendars for several
region of Queensland and individual ones for walk-in clients. E-mail me a
real (as in not hotmail) address and I'll send you details.

some kodak shops offer this service, check out their sample calendars.
Same with office works, though I wasn't too happy with the quality.

Personally, I'm still looking for blank calendars to attach photos (not
print-outs)
to. Very hard to come by, I could print the pages myself but then I won't
have the binding.....

Clamp the printed sheets together with two bits of 2x1 timber, covered in
cling film, letting about 1 to 2mm protrude out the top. Run a bead of
white PVA glue along the edge of the prints.  Let it dry, unclamp, punch a
hole about 8mm down from the top, dead center left/right to hang the
calendar on a nail, and you're done.  The expired month's pages peel off
quite well.  Try it, you may just like it!

Just printed some for XMA$$ presents, from our narrowboating holiday in UK.

Isn't there some software  (preferably freeware) that does this? OP (and I)
can then do it on our own computer and printer at home!
Any pointers welcome.

That's a canon thing and pretty rudimentry stuff it is too.
Maybe here
http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/index.html?year=2005&country=29 might be
better. You can customize the holidays. It too is rudimentry but less so
than Canon's! I eventually made the pages I use by hand with a vector
drawing program. It's the only way to get exactly what you want. My opinion
is the lines on these free calendars are not fine enough and start to look
very "primary schoolish".

http://search.pbase.com/search?q=calendar&b=Search+Photos&c=sp and you'll
find about 600 calendar designs you can download for free too. The part that
will slow down making 12 page calendars at home is the wire binding. Even if
you do find someone who will do it for you, they probably can't punch the
centre for the hanger so you'll be limited in how you can display them.

If you do it at home on an Inkjet. Be sure to use Archival matt paper. This
has the best chance of lasting the full year without fading. If you can, get
the cover and a blank back page laminated too. This will help keep it stiff
and go a long way to stopping the pages curling up when it rains.

This place is a bricks and mortar place in Adelaide:

http://www.thebureau.com.au/

I've done some printing there because he is a friend of a family member.

As far as I have been told, he specialises in 'short print runs' and I
know he does callenders, and I'm pretty sure he has a template you can
use for callanders, but I'm a little unsure about details.  Might be
worth investigating anyway.

Cheers,

Phil Windsor.

Try ringing someone like Snap Printing and see if they can do it or point you in
the right direction.
