10x8 digital print pricing

Rural QLD CC - 23 Nov 2004 00:33 GMT Greetings, I've just looked around at pricing on getting 10x8 prints done from some of my digital files (taken on my D70). I've found www.digitalphotoprint.com.au and the pricing looks a lot more reasonable than anything I've been quoted locally ($11.00 per print is the cheapest I've been given over the phone so far from local vendors). Any other places I might look at before I submit these for printing? I've got 27 shots I want printed.
Thanks, MrBonk www.mrbonk.com

Seems like a good deal even including postage, but I havent used them before.

Wolf359 - 23 Nov 2004 01:23 GMT $11.00???? Gold plated are they?? Average price in Perth is $8-10 out of a Fuji-Frontier.
Email your files to alpinestar@conceptual.net.au and he will print them out and post them to you.

Surely they have a web or ftp or something?!
Scott.
Wolf359 - 23 Nov 2004 07:35 GMT You can email them.
They also use the Fujifilm webservice. You upload the file to Fuji and they pass it along to the nearest frontier.

Rural QLD CC - 23 Nov 2004 01:47 GMT Well, another place quoted me $13.50 per print :-) Then he graciously knocked the price down to $11.00 per print too. Unbelievable that ppl pay so much for prints!!

That cheap?! The only local place where I am (Which is a kodak shop) charges $14.95 for a sheet, which is either 1 8x10, or 2 7x5's. I Couldn't believe the prices on digitalphotoprint! I Don't use our local mob, I use my work's Epson Picturemate for 6x4's. (6x4's at local kodak shop are $1.50 for 10 or less!) If I ever need bigger, I know where to go!

Rural QLD CC - 23 Nov 2004 04:07 GMT I asked what the price would be for 'direct from file' prints, but it's the same no matter what. They tell me they would normally colour/density balance the shots before printing, so either they're doing that for free, or they're ripping off people who want direct prints. Most likely the latter, of course.......

Have a look at Photoking http://www.photoking.com ask for there price list. Also available they have an ftp site for uploads. Lots of information on there site ( which is now heaps better)"We will soon be offering new services. Wide Format Digital Printing which prints direct onto various vinyls and rigid substrates." for those interested. etc.

They'd want to be posted in a fairly rigid envelope and I've no idea what that would cost.
Canon state that prints with Canon ink on the Photo Paper Pro should last 25 years.
Check with the post office and maybe I can help you out.
P.S. I can set up FTP because I pay for web-hosting for my main business.

Rural QLD CC - 23 Nov 2004 04:37 GMT www.digitalphotoprint.com.au will do 10x8 prints for $2.20 (gloss) or $1.45 (matt). That's about as cheap as I think I'll find it anywhere!

That's about as cheap as I think I'll find it anywhere! > > MrBonk > www.mrbonk.com Nearly all the replies quoting prices less than the cost of photographic paper are bluring the fact that a digital print is a printout from a colour laser printer. Currently Xerox (leaders in digital printing) charge owners of their digital printers, 25 ? per A3 page for maintainence and toner. Gloss 180 Gsm paper which produces a picture not unlike a photograph costs about the same price.
Emulsion coated photographic paper, the chemicals to develop it and the lease payments on a very basic lab capable of churning out A4 and A3 size photographs make real photographs more expensive. Much more expensive.
The lease on a $300,000 digital photo lab is high enough to make most house mortgages look like small change. Don't expect anyone with one of these jiggers to put out an 8"x10" or 12" print for less than it's true worth of about $10. Anything less has to come from either an old (as in out of lease) lab or a laser printer. And if you think lasers can't put out photographs... Get into the real world because they do!

Gloss 180 Gsm paper which > produces a picture not unlike a photograph costs about the same price. I was initially impressed with the pricing at www.digitalphotoprint.com.au but when I saw them mention duplexing, a closer look revealed that they were outputting from Xerox gear, ie. a colour laser printer. I purchased a Xerox C410 for my work a few years ago for about $8k (I think), and while it puts out impressive prints, and I'm sure the technology has improved since, they're still a long way from the quality of a top-end inkjet, or photographic process. Lasers suffer from the fact that they're essentially a layer of molten plastic, so they don't have the smooth sheen and texture of ink or emulsion.
On a recent job, I offered a client the choice between A3 prints from my Canon S9000 and the local pro lab's Pegasus - I did a sample print of the same layout from each, and the client preferred the inkjet, despite my reservations about longevity. The series is mounted under glass, and is not in direct sunlight, so I'm hoping they last at least a couple of years. The difference in cost is significant - an A3 from the Canon, using genuine ink costs about $7 a page, an A3 Pegasus costs about $27 (maybe less now, this was a few months ago).

So the quoted price of $11 per print was actually pretty close to right? I think probably what I'll do is get these 27 images done on the cheap, decide which ones I really want to use for the series I'm making, and then get those ones done as 'proper' prints then.

Well, hydrophotographics does their prints cheaper... but like I said originally, I havent tried them yet. I'm about to do a test-run with them to check the quality of their prints. I've heard good things though.
What you should do is ask them about their print process, and ask if they can send you a sample or at least a half-price print to see what the quality is like (if you're going to do a fair number of prints - I like to find a good place and stick with them).

I certainly did not blur any facts. I dont really like laser printer prints. Hydro does prints from an Agfa D.Lab2 which is not a colour laser printer.

I've found [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > Scott The frontiers at HN use 150 Gsm paper, last time I looked and they cannot do A3. $4.08.6 is the cost per 8x10 or A4 to print on a Frontierer. If they have to run a colour check print every day (which they don't but should) that's $25 per week in lost prints without counting those which customers don't like and expect a reprint. From where I sit, they would be doing 30 or so prints a week without payment, hoping the remainder will make up for the loss... And it doesn't!
HNs have processing in-store as a loss leader to sell digital Photographic equipment. 150 Gsm paper is not, in any way whatsoever, good for mounting. It is barely suitable for use in a photo album and definitely would be next to useless if anyone intended to handle it more than a few times. It crumples like a bank note.
If Hydro are doing 12x18 photographs from their Dlab on true photographic paper for $5, they are doing them below their cost. The system they have cost more than a quarter of a million bucks ($300,000 according to their web site). Unless they are in financial difficulty, they couldn't possibly afford to sell true photographs of that size under $10. Even then, they would have long term viability problems trying to sustain such prices.
My guess is their business is sound and like me, they have a $5 a copy Xerox out the back and use Xerox "Colourtech+ Supergloss" paper with the fuser on the laser turned up to melt the toner into a gloss surface. Casual customers wouldn't know the difference. Certainly my non professional customers can't tell the difference until I point it out under a loupe. Even then, they still go digital for the price. So do some of the Professionals!

The pro lab I use does prints that size on an RP30, (& a Durst Lamda for larger sizes), using Kodak paper for less than $6 a print, & I'm quite sure that they aren't running a charity for impoverished photographers. The economics of that sort of operation in a big city are very different to those of a smaller city. My understanding is that their machines run pretty close to maximum capacity, so they can amortise the purchase costs much faster than a smaller operation.

If so, that is about A$8, not too far off the A$10 mmentioned by the first poster. Excellent quality REAL photographs! Excellent service from professional staff who know what they are talking about! (This makes a nice change)
The suggestion that Hydro offers laser prints is just plain stupid.

Sir_Bazz - 30 Nov 2004 11:34 GMT Happy to respond.
Today I received my "freebie print" from Paul and the guys at Hydro Photographics.
I'll begin by saying that this is the first time I've had digital prints developed by mail order so my primary concerns were firstly the quality of the prints and secondly if they'd survive the mail trip back via Aust Post.
I'm happy to report that after opening the big yellow envelope that contained my A4 print that my concerns were unwarranted.
The print itself is on very nice Agfa Sensatis paper that has nice weight and gloss to it and created a very good picture from the .jpg of our youngest daughter.
The packaging was an A4 envelope containing an order form, pricelist and a 1.5mm sheet of cardboard to protect the pic from damage in transit. It arrived in perfect condition.
I could go on but instead I suggest if you want to know more then you take up this free offer from Hydro and make up your own mind.
I did!
Cheers, bazz.

That's OK, As long as it's not marked "Fragile" or "Do not bend", it'll survive. :) (I lost count of how many times I've had subscription magazines marked "Do not bend" folded up and shoved in my postbox :-@ )

Thanks Bazz, I Thought about taking them up on the offer, but I'm not going to be doing a huge amount of large prints like that, and I don't like taking advantage of freebee services unless I'm seriously planning to spend...
So now that I've seen some good feedback from two people so far, I'll make sure their page is bookmarked for if / when we do want larger prints :)

Russ - 01 Dec 2004 06:17 GMT I got a 12x18" print from Hydro yesterday - the print was a layout of architectural photos on a coloured background with text and logos. The print was sent flat with a very thick piece of cardboard guaranteed to resist the efforts of the postman to bend it in half, and the print had the filename printed on the back - very handy.
I had previously got the same layout printed on a Pegasus and the Hydro version compares very well. Obviously there are slight gamma and colour balance differences as I hadn't calibrated my system before getting the test print, but in terms of reproduction quality, I can't fault it.
Furthermore, the Pegasus print cost $27, whereas Hydro charge $5 (plus postage) which is less than the $7 in ink and paper it costs to do the same print on a Canon S9000 inkjet.

I will be happy to use Hydro in the future for large prints or large quantities. (I have an Epson R800 printer that I will use for most printing.)
Out of interest, Paul: how many people took you up on your offer? (Or is that commercially sensitive :-)
Thanks again!

hydro - 08 Dec 2004 10:38 GMT Hi Michael, About 15-20 people took me up. Have met some really nice people and already got some re-orders. There are a darn lot of good photographers out there! and with digital slr's making it easy (if you learn 'how') more of you should turn your hobby into an income. The trick is to get lots of prints in front of lots of wallets :-) Thanks to everyone for your kind words Paul

I am very happy also , (even with the lower DPI and quality saving than I usually use the print is spot on).. as I expected to be.. I use a D2 lab here in Newcaslte. I like your prices better though Paul.. I'd rather more money in my pockets after a job :-)
Turn around time was impressive (late Friday evening email, print arrived in Newcastle Wednesday)... I have some year 12 reprints here ready to go. Can I send "FTP" a variety of sizes or do they HAVE to be 8x12 as you web site suggests?.. I reprint in 3 sizes for clients. Brenton

[quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > The trick is to get lots of prints in front of lots of wallets :-) > Thanks to everyone for your kind words I too have nothing but praise to spruik for Paul, his product, and the professional manner in which he conducts his business. I received my test print in record time and in an effort to solve some additional minor dilemmas he even engaged in producing some additional test technical prints for me and followed it up with a phone call. Great service, one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
Cheers,
Rob
Geoff - 04 Dec 2004 02:54 GMT Paul, Many thanks. My photo arrived in the mail today and I am ecstatic with the print.

I accepted Paul Dawson's offer of a free demo print. I sent him a file by email on 2 December, and the print has just arrived in today's mail. It's a nice match with the image opened in Photoshop on my Spyder-calibrated Trinitron monitor. It was well packed, flat in an envelope with a piece of heavy board.
Thanks Paul, I'm convinced!

I've got a long list of other business that I plan to put Paul's way now.

I like to use them as Christmas cards for those not on my regular Christmas card list. ;-) LOL
