Day one was wet, day two was blisteringly hot, sunny & humid. Today is
the big day and the weather looks to be a little kinder to all. It's a
bit cooler and partly cloudy right now.

I got here at 6.10am this morning and only expect to leave at around
midnight tonight - BIG party with the teams and the media, to which
yours truly is invited. Hooray.

Photography is extremely difficult around the circuit mainly because of
the fencing and concrete walls . There are a few holes in the fence
around the circuit, but for every hole there are about 50 photogs! Bun
fight! Pan shooting is next to impossible. I managed to get a few shots
at the second corner but even shooting at f/11 and 1/640sec the cars are
still moving fast enough to look a bit blurred.

After about five minutes of being at the trackside yesterday my ears
were screaming in pain, so I mugged somebody and stole their earplugs.
Only joking, I bought them. These cars are LOUD! Bloody Jos Verstappen
seems to have the loudest of them all.

Those of us wearing white tabards are allowed onto the grid, so
hopefully I will be able to bring you some decent pics of the glamour
side later today. I could have sworn I saw Murray Walker sitting at one
of the pubs outside the media centre yesterday, but then again it was
really hot so I might have been hallucinating. I did see Emmerson
Fittipaldi and obviously all the drivers.

It sounds like you had severe constraints that unfortunately kept you from
panning.
The effect in most of these shots are cars that appear to be
sitting....parked.
-Not exactly giving a sense of motion... but it sounds like you couldn't do
much due to fence, etc.
I think you might try a bit less shutter speed to allow a bit of blur.  If
you can't motion-blur the background with panning, maybe you can at least
allow a bit of blur in car.  Otherwise, they look pretty static.

(except, of course, for that one VERY blurry image...which happens to be my
favorite of the bunch--even though there is not auto detail visible)

BTW--the interface on this little web-page is neat-looking, but extremely
inconvenient.
There is no way to view each shot in sequence without individually clicking
on each tiny thumb...and as soon as you try to move to the next, it grows a
bit...which forces you to skip a thumb or two...meaning you then have to go
back to the skipped one to see the full sequence.

Perhaps that's not your site, but it needs some work.
Looks?  A+
Utility?  D

PS--What the heck is that black thing in the first image?

Always a problem.

The cars are too quick for that.

?? Probably rain spray that makes it look blurred.

I'll be sure to pass your comments on to the people at Adobe who added
it as a utility to CS2.

That's the nose cone for the Team New Zealand car.

Lots more images today - busy downloading now. Don't think I will be
able to post more today...

I'M KNACKERED!!!!!

Too quick to create a bit of motion blur???
That doesn't make any snese.

No...  I mean the shot where there is this big blurry blob that is obviously
a car flying by.
I like that one.

Didn't know that...but...it isn't very friendly.

Thanks for those. Nice pics.
Hm.. Tifosi. Don't they know there are no Ferraris there ? Who am i
kidding, probably not, they are Tifosi. :-)

ps To Mark and others : Look at the pics right to left, it's easier to
navigate. Oh and death to Flash.

Ya...I noticed that later on...
Still a very fiddly design.
-Much prefer to simply click thumbs that are big enough to actually see,
rather than microscopic little squares that look like they MIGHT resemble a
piture...

It's not Flash, it's Java - I know this because I had to turn Java on to
be able to see the pics.

The page utilizes Java to help implement the design, but it's definitely
flash driving it.  In fact, looking at the code, I've never seen anything
quite like it.

I agree that it's definitely flash.  That's easily seen from a look
at the source code.  The source code also contains this line:
"FlashObject embed by Geoff Stearns geoff@choppingblock.com
http://choppingblock.com/"  Perhaps Chopping Block are the designers?

In any event, the fact that most of this thread talks about the web
interface rather than the photos, is a good indication that the flash
design needs some work.  I actually gave up looking at the photos
until Frank pointed out that I should look at them from right to
left.  I wasn't that smart on my own! :(

It's a utility that is built into Adobe Photoshop CS2. Simply point it
at the folder holding the images and tell it where to put the output.

I just didn't have the time to properly sort out the image size and
thumbnail size. Will do so next week.

Crap utility.  Just because Adobe added it does not make it good.  Just
listen most of the people who visited your site had an issue with it.
So there must be a problem as the issue was consistent.

It was fine for a quick job--only the internet illiterate would be unable to
view the images.

That's not a nice thing to say about Mardon. ;-p

Yes guys, stop knocking it. Dallas did all that between qualifying day
and race day. Maybe i'm getting unfit, but spending 14-15 hours on my
feet at the race track will not likely find me rushing home to play
with jpegs and write a neat html page or java application..
Point was made, he acknowledged it and will probably do something
about it.. (probably by saying, screw you, you ungreatful lot)

Those of you in the photo group can now return to bash the image
quality, the use of shutter speeds and light sources and we on Rasf1
will resume abusing the drivers and the looks of the cars.
Deal ? ;-)

I haven't done or heard any bashing.

Thanks Frank. That was the most exhausting thing I have ever
photographed. I eventually decided to forego the media party because I
just couldn't stand up any more. I left the media centre at about 6.45pm
and got home an hour later. I live less than 10kms from where the race
was held. Almost heard the whole of James' "Getting Away with it"
concert on the way.

I got some really nice shots of the opening ceremony yesterday, plus a
few of the accidents at the first corner (hairpin). God, those marshalls
were the most inept people I have ever had the misfortune of being in
proximity to. Talk about retarded, I think they must have had a
collective IQ of about 75 between all of them, especially the bunch at
the hairpin. Cars were spinning off all over the show and even with the
safety car out, most of them were too stupid to do anything about the
debris on the track or move the cars out of the way.

Usually, I boycott flash. I don't if that makes me 'illiterate'. I just don't
want any junk that distracts from the content. So, if a photographer can't
display his work without flash, then I will be happy to do without it.

In this case, I viewed it with a browser that did have flash (I probably
forgot to disable it after I needed it, or something like that). It was a
good reminder to keep boycotting flash.

That was it. Done. The faulty Monk was turned out into the desert where it
could believe what it liked, including the idea that it had been hard done
by. It was allowed to keep its horse, since horses were so cheap to make.

In order to view it I had to break out IE, FFS.

Rather scrappy pair of races with too much driver error, seemed like
a seriously narrow and bumpy track - probably more suited to something
the size of an F3 rather than the A1GP car. But flippin' 'eck, that move
on the last lap of the feature more than made up for the same driver's
cockup in the sprint!
