I have just got for christmas, a Nikon FM2n + 50mm f1.8 and a MD11
winder from Jessops.
Can anyone tell me if this is a good camera to start learning
photography or should I take it back for something else, poss better
model. The salesman there told me he thought it would be a good model
to start with for my new hobby....?
Please advise!

Sounds fine.  You might want to pick up a 35 or 28mm lens for the wider
view and an 85, 90 or 105 for a longer view too.  No rush at all.  Fixed
focal length lenses can be found in a lot of used equipment displays in
the stores or on e-bay.

The winder is not essential.

Great camera and sought after by many. Great for learning and still used
by many top pros. The 50mm is a very nice lens. Try to find a 28 or 35, I
prefer the 35, and a 105 for portraits.

The 105 f2.5 lens is one of the best Nikon lenses ever.  It is too bad that
they have never offered it in an AF mount.

Yep I had one when I was a Nikon guy. I still miss that lens but I have
to say that my Pentax Super Takumar is better in overall look for what I
do which is low light portraits and stage shots of bands.

Its a great camera make no mistake about it.  probably the best to learn on
and use professionally too.
! would have gone for the Nikon fe2  as the additional benefits would be
TTL flash and aperture priority mode metering

What an excellent camera!!! This body has just about everything you
could want in a general photography body. It will serve you well. It
is my preference for low light photography because of the lighted LED
exposure indication in the viewfinder. The mirror pre-fire on the self
time takes care of most mirror lockup applications. Just an excellent
choice.

The MD12 winder is a proper match for FM2n generation but the MD11
should work OK. I've forgotten all the details, but it seems you have
to be a bit more careful about turning the camera off with the MD11.
Others may want to clarify this.

Good luck, and most of all have fun. As you develop your craft you
will discover the bounty of used AI and AIS lenses available for this
camera. A great choice.

Regards,
Roger

Yes. It is good camera to start learning photography. It is also a good
camera to keep learning photography. Contrary to what many think
photography is not an equipment-sport but an art calling for love and
devotion (hmm.. also some knowledge). But yes, it might be the only
camera You need.
You might want to consider a wide-angle (35 mm ?) and a short tele (105
- 135 mm ?).

Terrific camera! I've been using the FM with MD11 for over 20 years.
This combination will not hinder your growth, only increase your
knowledge. The major difference between the MD11 & MD12 is that the 12
will shut itself down after 50 seconds. Don't forget to turn off the 11
when you are finished shooting for the day or when you put it in your
camera bag.

Sure !

1. You should dorp down Aperture and Shutter Speed for each photo.

2. You can take photos at noon as well as at night.

3. Photos of portrait and landscape must be included.
