How about some more info, such as Canon EF 50 1.8 II USM

What about them? The Canon is a very fine lens, as I'm sure the Nikon
is, too, though I'm not familiar with it. These basic lenses tend to
be time-tested and very worthy, especially at their price.

Very sharp. Horrible bokeh, especially the Nikkor.
[Cue: What is bokeh?]

Its a question of taste.

Absolutely nothing.
Why didn't you ask Polson the same question when he posted his backhand
insult to Sander?
Cheers,
Alan

He ain't got none. He does apparently have a computer or at least use
of one at the library.

With your regular "anybody who doesn't agree with me on all matters
bokeh is either dumb, deranged or lacking in taste" droning you are
making a really nice impression of getting paid to dis particular
brands of lens in a <quote>but do it in a smart way, dontcherknow</quote>
particular way.

It's a fact that neither Nikon nor Canon could care two whits about bokeh,
where some other lens manufacturers do. So, it's matter of taste as to
whether you care about these qualities or not, but their presence or lack
thereof is irrefutable. Still, I like my nikon 50 1.8. If you separate
your subject from the background and try to ensure no small light sources in
the background, the bokeh's just fine.

No, the photographer sucks.

Your opinion was reached in what manner? If you've gotten less than stellar
results with either, and the lens of you choice was attached to the proper
camera, then you should look to yourself as the problem.

Please restrict your comments to subjects you know something about.
I own both lenses and neither "sucks". Both are fine normal primes and
should give exemplary results used with proper technique.

Have not used either. Being of the Nikon persuasion, I choose the 50mm
f/1.4 AFD Nikkor. I have no complaints. It does what I got it for. A
lens for use in low lighting conditions or when a small lens is needed.
I find the f/1.4 to give sharp contrasty images. I have read reports
and viewed sample photos shot with the f/1.8 though. You may even be
able to find some comparisons on the web if you searched some. Get the
one which fits the system you own and shoot with it. The f/1.8s are
reported to be a bargain and a good performer.

I know nothing about these lenses, but isn't it said that Canon lenses are
generally higher resolution, softer, less contrasty and less saturated,
whereas the Nikon lenses are sharper, more contrasty and more colourful?
Stereotyping loads, but would be interesting to hear if it's true.
Duncan.

although it's a bit outdated duncan check out photodo.com - both of the
lenses on this thread are outstanding. even though i'm a nikon fan (and
a relative newbie) i've no doubt that canon lenses are overall neck and
neck with nikkors. both companies make a few cheap turkeys and both
have among the very best available - with the average leaning towards
the high quality end of the scale.

The Canon lens wins easily on my 20D, Totally Digital D60, and Fabulous
EOS-1V.
The Nikon lens? Hell, it won't even work!

Yes it will. Stephen Gandy, Novoflex, Fotodiox and the like can help with
that.
