Hi all,
I want to purchase a B1 head and a RRS clamp. I got stuck, becuase of
the following questions:
1. What's the difference between 1/4" Threaded Top Plate and 3/8"
Threaded Top Plate? Which one do I want esp. with respect to easy
installation.
Here: http://reallyrightstuff.com/clamps/index.html#AS the write
something about the 1/4", which I don't understand, but what makes me
scary. I don't want to buy anything that requires me to buy any Loctite
271 and mess around instead of nice and easy installation...
"To mate to a 1/4"-20 stud, buy our custom stainless steel reducer
bushing that screws into the clamp's socket, thereby converting it to
1/4-20 size. Use Loctite type 271 (red fluid, and virtually permanent)
threadlocking liquid when you screw this bushing into the clamp's
socket. Buy Loctite 271 at any auto parts (not hardware) store. You
should allow Loctite to cure overnight before use."
2. Which of the RRS clamps do I want for which B1 head? They write,
that for current model of the B1 head the B2 AS II, B2
Pro II or B2-Pro LAS are the right match. However the also write, that
the come as with non-threaded center socket. On the other side I read
on robertwhite.co.uk, that the Monoball B1 comes with 1/4" Threaded Top
Plate. Does this mean that they do not fit together?
The fact that RRS does not use e-mail is a major pain in the neck, to
put it gently. They should at least make descriptions, that people are
able to understand. I got their catalog, but it's as "clearly"
described as their website...
Please help!
Thanks!

3/8" thread is basically the thread used to connect your ball head to your
tripod.
1/4" thread is the thread size for a standard thread underneath your camera.
re. the clamps , I have no idea. They have custom clamps for almost
everything :D

If you are getting a CURRENT B1 head, you need a clamp WITHOUT a threaded
mounting hole because it mounts to the B1 by a through bolt which is shown
in close-up on the RRS website. The threaded clamps are used when you
remove the factory top plate from other ballheads (not the current B1) and
need a RRS clamp into which the remaining post on the ball head will screw.
You should always use loctite on any of these threaded connections unless
the connection is one which you intend on removing repeatedly.
