Hi girls and boys,
Just a silly problem here (I hope....). I just tried out a Nikon D1x. The
camera was setup with a 24-70mm lens (not a 'D' or 'G' type). Every shot was
okay and the camera gave a preview. Changing the lens to a 'D' type: the 20
mm f/2.8 and the 80-200 F/2.8 ED every shot taken in P mode resulted in a
black (underexposed?) preview. Switching to A (aperture priority) mode it
managed to make a few shots exposed okay but on S (shutter priority) or P
nothing came up on the lcd.
Does anybody have a clue to what this could be caused by?? I looked through
most of the custom menu's and reset both the custom menu's and the general
settings back to factory settings..
Regards,
Drew

Did you make sure that the aperture of both "D" lenses were set at their
min. ie f/22. There is handy locking tab on those to prevent the ring
from being moved which should be used. Otherwise I have no idea.

It should give the EE error if it's not, not take a picture...

Yes, even my old F60 was giving an error if the aperture ring wasn't locked.

I'd say that is a clue--that you shouldn't buy that camera! I don't have a
D1x, I've never used one, but the D70 I use at work doesn't have any such
problem with my AF-D lenses, or the one G lens that came with the camera.
Good luck.

If you put the camera in manual and use a light meter, or a sunny 16
guess, what happens?
Try:
Cycle the power
check the electrical contacts

That camera sounds poked.
However, it could be dirt on the electrical contacts of both the camera
and the lens. Try cleaning them with a pencil eraser.
