So, I did actually shoot this just for the mandate.
A good photograph needs no explanation, and mine sustains this notion.
So here starts the required lengthy explanation: ;-)
America, to a lot of the outside world *is* Hollywood. And Hollywood
is responsible for doing this to what was once a truly cool car. I now
had my subject.
A check on the EXIF photograph date shows that John DeLorean died
later that day, in Summit, New Jersey. His life story also neatly fits
the mandate. This bit obviously wasn't planned and I had no part to
play in his demise.
John's story: Hard work, success, cool cars, drugs bust, bankruptcy,
everything turns to crap and then you die. Ugly America.
About the photo:
Shooting through the glass, I didn't have a polarizer with me (it was
nearby, but not on the lens. I was being lazy and needed to keep up
with the party) so the magic of Photoshop had to be wielded back home.
Once I started to play, I couldn't stop and this is the result. (Yes,
it's 'cheating' I guess).

Comments on others:
Colin Donoghue: Hit the mandate, no question, that building is ugly.
Slightly boring subject choice.
Jim Kramer's image is cool, but I am confused as to how this meets the
mandate. It's quite pretty actually.
R Schenck: I was expecting drug dealers. Focus a bit soft? Nice to see
that not everyone chose daytime overcast B&W.
Thom Hudson's TV picture:
I think I would have gone for a much longer DOF. The subject is
obvious and doesn't need to be pointed out with tight focus. The point
of the image is household waste in a natural environment, but I can't
see the natural environment.
Rich Pos:
Great, and funny too. If I were to choose one to publish, this would
be it.
Ken Tough's razor wire image is superb, excellent hit on the mandate.
I'd like to see more of the wire though, deeper DOF.
Alan's subject choice was perfect. Mc D's.
Bowser:
Yep, seen that stuff everywhere and the brain just switches it off. I
see Mc D's makes another appearance.
Aaron Grier:
Spooky.
Ken Nadvornick:
Great statement, bit messy with the waste pipe. I think I'd crop away
everything from the pipe to the left, and chose to shoot it in color.
Walt Hanks:
Eh?
Bob Hickey:
Some people's ugly is other peoples beauty. Great shot.

Cheers. I could possibly have pushed it one more stop, but I had to
hold the camera quite precariously so I wanted to keep the shutter
speed up. One thing I will say... razor wire is one hell of a test
for autofocus. Man, that D70 was hunting like a lion in august.

You don't find the continued contamination and poisoning of the environment
ugly?
Beauty or ugliness is in the eye of the beholder and like so many other
things is open to interpretation based on our personal past experience and
the cultural bias that we are brought up in. This was another "protest
shot." Stunningly beautiful, but very ugly.
And if none of that works for you.... it was a parking lot at Wal-Mart.

Sorry, I completely misinterpreted the subject. For some reason, I
thought this was a burn mark from a blow-torch.
But It's an oil spill...

You didn't consider that the audience might be too stupid to
understand it, even given major clues such as the mandate. My fault.
>And if none of that works for you.... it was a parking lot at Wal-Mart.
It all makes perfect sense now.

Alan, I'm impressed that you could so easily identify the Wal-Mart parking
lot. ;-)

eh? For 'ugly' I did shoot a Wal*Merde parking lot and sign, but it was
a very drab photo. Also shot the McD at night. The shot I used was the
best in terms of the mandate... I think.
Cheers,
Alan

Read the thread again, my shot was taken in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

I thought about McDo, then an SUV in front of a Walmarde...
Of course George Bush or Paul Martin would be ugly too...:)

That does seem to be the story lately.

Thanks for the kind review.... glad you liked it.
To avoid a problem I first went into the store and asked if I could
shoot a picture. The mgmt. seemed nice enough but HOOOOEY, there were
some real weirdo-s in there.
Jonathan Demme couldn't have cast a *better* group of perverts.
