I bought some Elite chrome 200 from a minilab on the the day they were
closing down for $AU4.20/36 shot film. I have never used this film
before so would like to know ifis it any good. Did I waste my money?

Thanks
Mike

Elite chrome is a step up from the consumer based kodachrome.  200 speed is
fairly general photography.  Not to fast to be grainy not slow to require
the constant use of a tripod.  If you are new to slide film its a good a
place to start as any especially if you got it cheap.

Actually, EliteChrome 100 is the consumer version of Ektachrome E100S.

A better GP slide film (IMO) is Sensia 100.

Cheers,
Alan.

Not sure I'd call Kodachrome "consumer based", even if at one time it was
probably the leading amateur colour film.  Now it is sadly a niche interest,
due to the limited processing support.

Is E100S still around where you are Alan?  It seems to have been replaced by
E100G here (E100SW was replaced too, by E100GX).

In 120 I bought some last fall.  Oops.  Nope that was VS.

I did by some 135 E100S last summer.  Now it's the "G"'s.

I'm not sure if Elitechrome 100 is still around.  I've been shooting
Sensia 100 as my GP film for about 18 months.  Love/hate relationship.
Velvia 100F (120) has been very nice and I do like the E100"G" too.

Shot Elitechrome 200 pushed 1 and 2 last winter.  Pretty good for the
condidions.

Cheers,
Alan.

So is that what you used when you were trying out the 'Blad?  I like E100VS
a lot, in 35mm and 120 (and 4x5, but I don't do that so often).  I just got
back from doing some architecture in Liverpool, and used several rolls.

Good film for a lot of things, and great in overcast light - it does do odd
things with some natural colours though, particularly mauve flowers which
come out an almost metallic purple (quite attractive, but not remotely
accurate.)

Velvia 100F is my other 'main' outdoor film, alongside E100VS.  The very
different colour palettes seem to suit different subjects, so I usually have
both with me, in different bodies / backs.  I find the pairing works nicely,
except for subjects requiring lower contrast, when I'll probably use print
film anyway - though maybe Sensia wouldn't be a bad thing for me to test in
that role too.

I've not tried pushing that.  I have used Ektachrome 200 ocassionally - is
that the same film, now re-named?  I pushed Velvia 50 one stop in the past
sometimes: the colours and saturation go up even further, but it works well
like that if the weather suddenly gets nasty, when you need the speed and
welcome the punched up colour anyway.  Haven't tried pushing 100F yet - must
do that...

It's a good film to push a couple stops and otherwise screw around with.
I have some of Gordon Moat's notes on pushing it if you want them.
(e-mail me).  I've done it (1 and 2 stop pushes) for volleyball with
great results (but funny color shifts with a mix of strobe and sodium-v
lighting, plus push effects).

E-C 100 *is* a very good film.  The 200 is not simply a faster version
of it.  It has much more grain than the simple speed change would suggest.

Cheers,
Alan

Works good for astrophotography. I have a friend who uses nothing but
E-200 for astro shot.
I've tried it making star trails  and it seems to work well.

So would E200 not be recommended for long shots of birds?

Thanks

The few times I've tried taking long shots of birds or anything else
I've always needed more film speed rather than less so that I can
shoot with a shutter speed faster than 1/focal_length.

I've struggled to get crisp shots with anything less than iso 400
film. However, that's hand held with an old manual camera and no fancy
stabilisation.

Matt

P.S. I don't that sort of thing very often so can't claim any special
expertise.

When I asked the questionI I was thinking about the contrast of the
film. I read somewhere that it is less contrasty than the E100.

I am sure you did not. I think EliteChrome100 is one of the best
consumer-grade slide films, very similar to Sensia100 but seems a
little 'colder'. It is very neutral and has sufficient color
saturation.

EliteChrome200 is the standard recommendation for 200ASA slide film on
a german photo newsgroup. It seems less grainier than, say, Sensia200
of which some think that it is a masked 400ASA film with all the
disadvantages of the latter. Some even prefer EliteChrome200 pushed
one step to generic 400ASA films.
