i have had a look at www.ajpurdy.co.uk selection of lenses.  Most of it is L
glass costing ?900 upwards.  I currently have the 28-105 usm and the 70-300.
I seem to have a bit too much depth of field with the 70-300 when shooting
football.  even at 5.6.  I am currently using sports mode with my 300D as
this is the only way of acquiring servo focusing and continous shooting and
high speed shutter and higher iso setting.  Some have suggested that i get
faster glass that would improve the focusing than buying the 20D.  Faster
glass in canons own seems out of my price range.  I am not a big fan of
sigma.  What do you guys think of tamron?

The 100-300 f4.5-5.6 USM would give you faster auto focusing and full
time manual focusing since it has Ring USM just like the EF 28-105
f3.5-4.5 USM and it is not expensive. You could trade your other 300
zoom to help pay for it.

I am not a fan of either, but I have read good things about the Tamron
90 f2.8 macro and the Sigma 70-200 f2.8  EX APO IF. The latter lens
compares well against the EF 70-200 f2.8L USM on MTF charts but it has
slower AF and may not work on future Canon cameras. I've read that Sigma
lenses aren't put together to well and are known to fall apart easily.
No thirdparty lens will focus as fast as a Canon lens that has Ring USM.
The Canon EF 75-300 lenses have Micro USM. Canon marks both as USM and
makes no distinction. Another fast one Canon has pulled is making a
28-105 f4-5.6 USM kit lens that is inferior to the 28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM
and has the inferior USM.

Having worked at jessops i have been in several shops were even the high end
sigma stuff is brought back.  Straight out of the box its failed.  A repair
came back and it fell apart right in my hand.  I personally have a sigma
lens that will work with some eos equipment but not others.  I have also put
a customers 18 month old sigma on a 20D and it refused to focus.  I don't
know about tamron and tokina.
I am looking at lenses again, i think a 2.8 constant aperture would nice
especially in a small mirror camera like my 300D  I'm sure the focusing
system would apreciate it.  The reduced depth of field may help too.

I think Tamron and Tokina make some very nice lenses indeed.
Actually, I've never owned a zoom made by a camera manufacturer; all
have been third-party.  (I've got 20, 24, 35, 50, 58, 105, and 135mm
Nikon primes, however).

I have a Tamrom 300mm f2.8, and it's a very nice lens indeed.  Not quite as
good as the Pentax, but for a lens I don't need to use often (I have a
Pentax f4 and f4.5 that are used much more) it's a really good tool - good
colour, better bokeh than some lenses this length, sharp (though not as
sharp as the Pentaxes), contrasty (though obviously not as contrasty as the
Pentaxes, still a lot better than most 300s) and very solidly built - all
metal.  Doesn't come in a very nice case though, as if that really
matters...

I decided to go for the L lens after reading bob atkins review (thanks cody)
emailed www.ajpurdy.co.uk last night.  They rang me first thing this morning
to say they haven't got any stock.  I asked about the lens hood and case
that comes with it.  Cos bob Atkins mentioned it and warehouse express
mention them too.  They said they didn't have any in stock right now and as
for the accessories some come with some don't they have a guy looking into
it now momentarily and will ring me back.  Two hours ago and nothing.  I
really want these guys to come through, I don't like dealing with big
faceless companies and all my enquiries up to now have been dealt with
courteously  and promptly.  I'll wait a day or two and give them a nudge.

I've got a Tamron 300 f2.8 non-autofocus myself, in fact.  Also a
Tokina 17mm and a Sigma 105mm macro.
