I wanted ask if someone of you is using one of the Giottos Universal
Tripods.

First time I saw these tripods was in the Outdoor Magazine, and
they were very positive about this device. Recently also Popular
Photographer added its as usual brief and positive (sic!) review.
Its a 22/26 lbs (10/12kg) class, long however if folded. Otherwise
clever designed and equipped with a unique center column which
can serve as a lateral arm. Very clever.

With all its accessories the package looks great. Of course the
most recommendations for a good quality reliable tripod would go
to Gitzo or Manfrotto, but the matter of fact is, that if one would
assembly something comparable in functionality to Giottos MT-8160
(or a similar model like the 8180,) one would have to pay a thousand.

The Giottos however run between $150--$300 complete (alu versus
carbon), and it almost look to good to be true. $300 for a carbon
fiber tripod with lateral arm... Hm...

But maybe they are simply that good and they hit overpriced
competition. Any opinions?

Thomas

PS:
Here is a list of Giottos at B&H, listed among "tripod legs,"
probably a bit misplaced;

I use the 9180 with a Manfrotto 329RC4 head. The combination easily
handles a 15lb 8x10 monorail and anything smaller. The 9180 folds small
enough that it should be okay for airline travel. It's not the lightest
tripod in the world. The CF is only a little lighter then mine and not worth
the extra money IMHO. I needed to get used to the leg locks but other then
that I've been fairly happy.

Great, thanks for the report. I conclude that Giottos package
come without the head, correct?

Actually it does come with a built-in head. If it's good enough for your
needs or if you need to go really low to the ground then you can attach the
camera to it. Or you can attach a head to the top of the tripods builtin
head. The built in has a combination 1/4" and 3/8" mount.
