Nikon F6 - anyone actually bought one??

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has bought a Nikon F6 and what
they think of it. There are numerous "reviews" on the web, but most are
from people who have never seen one. I'd be interested to hear from
anyone who has actually paid for one, and is using it, rather than see
yet another 'review' which is basically a summary of the specs from Nikon.

BTW, if you are in the UK and are thinking of buying one, I managed to
get mine for 1350 pounds from Jessops in Tottenham Court Road, London.
That is 175 pounds below the price on the Jessops web site and means it
was cheaper than buying it on eBay from Hong Kong. I bought a 50mm f/1.4
lens too, which was more expensive than I could have got one from Hong
Kong or the USA, but I could not be bothered to mess about to save a few
 tens of pounds.

However, I intend getting a telephoto lens which I will get from outside
the UK. The $ is rather weak, which is nice for us in the UK.

A friend of mine works in a camera store which has the F6. I played with one
a few days ago, and it just does not feel like it is made as well as the F5.
I have an F5 and it just feels more solid. The F6 feels as if it is made
more cheaply.

There's an F6?!?!?!?

Damn, I should pay more attention to the gear reviews... ;-)

The F6 feels good with the batteri holder attachment. It seems a bit lighter
build than
F4 and F5. If I should opgrade from my F4 I would go with the F6 as AF works
much faster and the F6 has the ability to use AI/AIS lenses with full color
matrix
metering.

At www.photographyreview.com, there are 2 short reviews on this
camera.  Though not a tremendous amount of information is presented,
at least the reviews are from people who actually own the camera.  I'm
a little tired of all the reviews from people who never laid eyes on
it.

Yes, as you say, not a lot of info.

Yes me too.

I don't feel in a position to write a review myself. I've not even stuck
a roll of film in mine yet (only got it yesterday, and have been
painting a new door+frame most of today.) But for what it is worth, here
are two critisisms I have.

1) The placement of the controls for focusing mode and lens release on
the left hand side I find a bit annoying. I find the fingers from my
left hand have nowhere comfortable to sit, as these controls get in the
way a bit.

2) The 'continuous silent' film advance mode, which the catalogue
describes as 'for nearly silent operation at approximately 1 fps' is not
exactly that silent to me. Even with no film in it, and therefore no
motor moving the film on, the shutter makes quite a bit of noise.
I just compared it to an old Praktica LTL-3, and it is a lot quieter
than  that I would admit.  Perhaps my idea of 'nearly silent operation'
is a little different from Nikons. Quite for an SLR may be, but nobody
in their write mind could describe it as 'nearly silent'.

That said, it looks a pretty impressive camera. The autofocus on the
only AF lens I have at the minute (50 mm f/1,4) is much faster than any
other camera I have used, but I have never used an F4 or F5, so can't
say how it compares with them.

Clearly needs a good read of the manual to do it justice, but those are
my only two dislikes to date.

I just need to sort out some decent lenses for it now.
