You don't use Nikon, do you. I do, and the "mess" is easy to work out.

Come now Matt, you can't stop the canon apologists drooling. They've
all gone very quiet about the EF-S lenses though, haven't they? :)

Sadly instead of going quiet they've launched a full frontal assualt on
Nikon. This is led of course by Tony Spadaro.

Yes. - I can hang any piece of glass Nikon has made since 1959 on my F5, and
shoot away.....It cost a hunk of change, but its been worth it for that fact
alone. And the latest VR, or IS lenses with built in computer chips and auto
focus and all the other bells and whistles still mount and work on the same
old F bayonet.......A truly remarkable engineering feat, IMO.

Not since my F4...Nikon told me it was autofocus...
Since I could focus my 80-200 faster myself I went to Canon.
Never looked back.

This illustrates the difference in preferences between different users.....I
have supposedly great AF in my F5, and I hate it and never use it. I didn't
like the AF on my son-in-laws Canon either. So, I could care less about AF,
and it has nothing to do with my choice of a camera....

Put an AF-S lens on an F4 and you have a very fast focussing camera. I
have the 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR and on my F4 it loses M and A modes, but
I have been able to live with that.
As far as the compatibility "mess" goes, it's quite simple to work around
if you know which bodies support which types of lenses.
What I like about the Nikon system is that even without the built in
metering for older MF Nikkors, you can still mount and use them on a
modern camera like the D70. The pro level cameras support nearly all the
lens types. There's nothing quite as satisfying as finding an old classic
Nikkor for next to nothing and being able to use it on a DSLR.

Matt, seriously considering getting one so how do you work the mess out??

Don't mount any non AI lenses, as they will cause damage to the camera. The
very few F3AF lenses produced are a no no. AI-S lenses will mount and shoot
fine, but won't meter. AI-P lenses have a chip in them, and will mount and
meter fine. AF, AF-D, AF-S, VR and G lenses are all good to go.
