Sometimes the film gets caught in the take up spool and becomes
very hard to rewind at the end of the process. If you persist
in trying to turn the crank at this point it might be why it
broke. If the film gets stuck at the end it probably safe just
to open the back and disengage it by hand since all the images
will already be inside the cartridge.
I think you'll just have to buy a replacement knob unless
you can find a machine shop to make you one out of metal.
You might have just gotten a casting with a flaw in it.

With your description of the background, I suppose I'd rather see the
knob break than the mechanism to which it is connected inside the
camera.
Come to think of it, he might want to consider a Noblex 150. No rewind
knob, no trouble... :-))
