Why don't the D-SLR makers (Nikon and Canon) make an option for a picture
that is 5x5 (or other size) option in the camera? It's all in the camera
nowa days...

A - It isn't all in the camera
B - You can't make smaller than 35mm into medium format
C - Anyone with a brain knows how to crop.

Say again?? What are you really asking for? Is it the square shape or
the higher resolution medium format (which is not always square) allows?
You can crop to square, and resolution is increasing as time goes on.

1. Compatible lenses do not produce images large enough to cover a 5x5
sensor.
2. Cost of producing large size sensor is v. expensive.
3. Cropping allows alternate shaped images.

I wonder if the origional poster is referring to directly printing from camera
to printer without going through the PC.

I suppose 36x36mm is doable with existing 35mm lenses, or would the
corners suffer vignetting. I'm not sure whether that would really
be a useful thing to impliment.

On some lenses (at least two of mine) the exit of the lens is
rectangular, which I suppose might help reduce internal
reflections in the mirror box area of the camera.
Those lenses with 'petal' type lens hoods would need compatible
hoods.
Otherwise, should work fine.

Actually, if you're talking about aspect ratio of the image, that could be
interesting, but it would necessitate some kind of mask in the view finder,
which would be problematic. Also, as Tony pointed out, most DSLR users are
manipulating the images on a PC/Mac, and could easily crop to a different
aspect ratio, and frequently do.
