Want to get this done before I read any other critiques.

What follows are just my impressions. I am a beginner at digital
photography and an amateur photographer at best. I can have pretty
strong feelings about what I like or don't like but maybe can't always
tell you just why one way or the other.

I just realized that I didn't give much of a description of the photo
I'm talking about, so you may want to open the web site and follow along
with it.

http://www.pbase.com/shootin/cxxx__wide

Here goes:

Wide Paul Cassel 1.JPG - I really like the color in this picture. I wish
it was a little bigger. It is only 980 px wide and you are allowed up to
1200. This seems like a pano or is really cropped.

WID-Tim-Conway_old1.jpg - Nice scene but the color seems kind of washed
out to me.

WID-Tim-Conway2.jpg - I like this picture for the different colors. I
would like to have seen it horizontal.

WIDE_Bret_Douglas1.jpg - I really like this picture. The horses seem to
almost "jump" off of the page at me.

WIDE_Bret_Douglas2.jpg - Cool. I had something like this in mind and
went looking for a cow but couldn't find a cooperative one.

WID-Tim-Conway3version2.jpg - Very nice. I like everything about this
photo. Great composition.

wide_03_tom_gabriel.jpg - I waffle on this one. There things I like and
things I don't. I think that it would have been better without the
clouds. (Not that there is much you could do about that but wait.) The
bird that just grabbed something out of the water is cool. Where was
this taken?

wide_01_tom_gabriel.jpg - Looks like a camera store test shot. Oh, wait,
I bet it is a camera store test shot.

wide_02_tom_gabriel.jpg - I like this photo. A minor quibble--I would
like to have seen a little more detail on the bottom of the bridge. I
really like the point of view.

wide_Doug_Payne_1.jpg - Nice, but doesn't do a lot for me. Maybe a
little too dark.

wide_Doug_Payne_2.jpg - I like this a lot. I really like the layers of
color from the road on up to the sky.

wide_Doug_Payne_3.jpg - This picture is cropped to tightly on the bottom
for me. The sky is just not interesting enough to be that dominant. Cool
bridge though. Where is it located? Maryland?

Wide_RussellDurtschi_Abandoned.jpg - What a freakin' cool pictu . . .
oh, uh, never mind. That one is mine.

wide_Simon_Steel_kingslynn_1.jpg - Now this is what wide angle
photography is all about! Wide view and distortion. I love this photo.
Great colors.

wide_Simon_Steel_kingslynn_2.jpg - Another nice one but the post on the
right is a bit overbearing for me.

Wide Jim Kramer 03.jpg - Doesn't really do much for me. The four
highlights are distracting and the whole picture is a bit creepy.

Wide Jim Kramer 01.jpg - I like this one. If I was to nit pick maybe a
little lower perspective would have allowed me to see what car in the
garage. That would have brought the cat into more of a full silhouette, too.

Wide Jim Kramer 02.jpg - Not sure how this is Wide. It is too much out
of focus to really interest me.

wide cooper1.jpg - Nice shot! I was wishing for binoculars to get a
better look at that object in the upper right corner.

wide cooper2.jpg - This one is kind of awkward for me. The guys arms
seem bent funny. I know they're not. It's just the impression.

Jump Troy Piggins Wide.jpg - This photo is odd in a fun, cool sort of
way. I love the jumping couple but I thought the post in the foreground
was kind of odd but as I looked at it I noticed how it framed the dog?
in the corner. I think it is a fun photo.

Milky Way Troy Piggins Wide.jpg - While maybe not a great photo (stars
are making trails) it inspires me to get out and experiment. It's a
great photo for not tracking. I'm amazed you can get that much color
from a thirty second exposure.

Wide_Martha_Coe_1_old.JPG - Nice but not great. Foreground is a bit dark
and that object in the bottom right corner is distracting.

Wide_Martha_Coe_2_old.JPG - Again, this is a bit dark. Actually, I don't
mind dark, maybe gloomy is a better word.

Wide_Bob_Coe_1_old.jpg - Clever. I like it. Is that you in the tan jacket?

Wide_Bob_Coe_2_old.JPG - This photo is nice. Maybe a bit too centered. A
bit less sky perhaps.

Wide_Bob_Coe_3.JPG - This photo is busy in a fun sort of way. I like the
way the lines of the trees and the lines of the web are so busy almost
to the point of distraction and then when your e - ye finally gets to the
spider in the center it is almost a relief. I hope that makes sense.
-
Wide Alan Browne old.jpg - This photo is nice but has me "scrunching"
down to try to see what's beyond the top edge of the photo.
-
Wide Alan Browne old 4.jpg - I really like this one. I love deserts. We
have places in Utah that look like that only not a pretty. I like that
other photographer in the photo.

Wide Alan Browne old 1.jpg - Like this one a lot as well. If I were to
quibble a bit--I find the wires a little distracting and I don't think
that add anything to what the photo is saying, so I might have cloned
them out.

wide_bowser-1.jpg - Wide x 6. I like it.

wide_bowser-3.jpg - I'm not a big fan of fish eye photos but this one is
kind of cool. I like the framing of the trees and power poles.

wide_bowser-2.jpg - Nice photo. It might have been more powerful if you
had moved left just a bit to fill the lower right corner with flags to
make it like a more endless field of flags. Hope that makes sense.

WIDE_Bret_Douglas5.jpg - WIDE! Ha, ha. I get it. Gross.

WIDE_Solomon_Peachy_old.jpg - A photo of a wide something.

WIDE_Paul-Furman_0001629.jpg - I like this photo. It seems a bit tilted
to the left but could be just the effect of the wide angle lens.

WIDE_Ken_Nadvornick.jpg - I'm a big fan of b&w done well and I like this
photo but I think it would have worked better with a bit more contrast.

Wide_Jeff_Heyen_Venezia_old_1.jpg - For me this photo would have worked
better with less water and more sky or just less water. Nice colors and
very pleasing.

Whew!

Thanks for listening and for all the great photos.

Not even close :-)

Hey, it was just a guess. I think there is a similar type bridge that
goes out the Eastern Shore. But then I could be completely messed up and
I'm tool lazy to Google it.

Russell

Thanks for the link. That was interesting.

Actually, that was one of the possibilities I'd considered, along with Tacoma
Narrows and Throg's Neck.

The Maryland bridge you're thinking of has had at least two parallel spans for
quite a few years.

To be honest, I didn't even notice the dog in that "frame" until
someone else commented on it  :)

They really enjoyed taking the shot, too.  Took about 3 or so.
Like I said in my comments, it's not quite what I had in mind for
what I wanted it to turn out like.  Oh well.

Thanks for commenting, Russell.  Not just on my photos, but on
all of them.  It takes time, but collectively makes it more
rewarding, I think.

You are a brave man.  When I attempt a shot like that, I fire off the
camera like it's a burp gun and hope that one shot is close.

Then it's a success in that sense!

What's there? The blownout highlights of the meadow!  My SO was crouched
down in the shady area looking for her own shots, and I was shooting the
'blad off of a tripod (doing a pano, IIRC).  I snatched out my digital
to catch her in the shades areas with those flowers.

I'm pretty fond of her myself.

Oddly enough, despite it being a ghost town, those 1920's era wires are
carrying power.  That house is where the park rangers (if that's the
right word live).

I considered taking them out of the images, after all, lots of blue sky
there for a quick fix, but decided that the photo was not harmed by
them.  That's the way it was...

This transformer or junction box is live (believe it or not):

Exactly! When I reread that (after I had posted it of course) I wished
that I hadn't used the word "but" but had used "and" instead.

I understand. Do you know if the original town had electricity or was it
brought in for the Ranger Station?

Wow, cool junction box.

I seem to recall reading that power was brought in from not very far
away back in the 20's (or earlier) but the details ...

It may well be a bit off. That lens is so tough to level, the slightest
sway & things have gone wonky.
