When is a bird in the hand not worth 2 in the bush?

Poor little things.  I'd ask an expert on what to do Jim.  I would
hate to see the neighbourhood cat grab any of them.
Very nice shots Jim.  The color and detail are great.

Very nice shots Jim.  The color and detail are great.

It appears after watching for a bit; that it is the juvenile males that are
on the ground.  I suspect that the older males are driving the younger off
the feeders. So if a juvenile male makes it to the feeder he fills up,
err... overfills a bit.  The whole thing is a bit odd as I have consistently
seen all ten holes on a feeder occupied.

The expert would tell me to put out more feeders or not feed them.  There
are no neighborhood cats as the coyotes have eaten them or their owners keep
them inside now because of the coyotes.  But there are plenty of other
things that would eat them.

I love the little eyelash feathers.

That's true.  I read where someone saw a praying mantis eat one.
Aww. :o(

Looks like a row of bumps/warts on the lower eyelid,
am I seeing that right?

They are feathers.

Wow, worth two in the bush!

From the page:

"For this bird I happened to have camera in hand."

You could also have said "For this camera I happened to have a bird in
hand"....

Or preying mantises.

They like hummer head.    .... But doesn't everyone?

An oldie but a goodie...

On a slightly more serious note, I was reading where some of the larger
robber flies have taken down hummers.

The pic is technically and compositionally very good, but I can't bear
to view it.  It's too grim and heartbreaking for me.
What can I say,  my heart is too tender.

It's ok that one is a fake, and is clearly labeled as such.

Damn!  Am I embarrassed!  I was so shocked by the gruesome pic I
didn't bother scrolling down to read any data.  Sorry Jim.  My
mistake.  But it's a great PS job!

"" After the last picture the bird sat up, crapped all over my hand, and
flew away. ""

Just a weight and balance problem, I guess.

Nice catches and good story to go with it  :)
Agree - interesting eyelash feathers.  While the interest factor
is high on the macro shots, I prefer the shot showing the red
colour on the throat.  Looks like a beautiful bird.
