Hi all..
I've been reading through this group for the past 8 years or so ..
Started out with an old Pentax and an m 50mm lens.. And was always
envious of the cameras going around at the time ..
I always tried to justify spending so much money on a new camera, if
all I was going to do was take random pictures of either my family or,
when I have time and finally got out of the house, landscapes, &c.
I've been wanting to take a leap into digital photography for a while,
and last week, on the 6th, to be precise, on my birthday, I got a
Nikon D80!
I am so happy, albeit a little overwhelmed with it and all the
features it has!
Moving from a k1000 to a D80 is a giant leap! Thankfully it seems easy
enough to navigate through its dials and what not.. And whilst not
having had taken too many pictures, the pre-set modes (ie, portrait,
action, landscape, night modes &c. ) look surprisingly good ..

Anyway I'm loving it thus far, and even the lens I got seems decent
enough to keep for a while .. (I got it with the 18-135 kit lens)..
Would have rather had the 18-200, but .... I won't complain.. :)

Again.. I'm here to share my excitement with the world.. So rejoice
with me!

Congrats.

It's not that great a leap at all.  The D80 is a very easy camera to use
and master.  Start with the simplest things... I would recommend
shooting in aperture priority or manual modes to start.

Use the histogram to avoid burned highlights.

You shouldn't.  Generally, the higher the zoom ratio, the poorer the lens.

Congrats and have fun.  The very first benefit will be instant feedback
when you shoot.  This allows as many free retries as you like to get it
right.

More importantly you can experiment more and be more creative, esp.
because of that feedback and essentially zero cost of error.

If you have a tripod then you're set to go with the night shooting.

Try out the shootin as well: link below.  Newest mandate is at the
bottom of the page.

Cheers,
Alan.

Congratulations!

future.

Make sure you share some of your pics, here with the group.

Good Luck,
Dudley

Certainly will!
Is there a photo database that is most commonly used to share these
in?
pbase is blocked by my firewall. (rude bastards). :S

There are a few:

Google Pictures works fairly well, as does Flickr.

There are a number of free web hosting sites, such as geocities that can be
made to work, although they are a bit restrictive in disk space and band
width.

If all else fails and you have a few pics you would like to post but don't
think it's worth going through the hassle of setting up a more permanent
site, you can e-mail me your pics, and I'll try to post them on my site:

E-mail to:

photos.digital@dudley-hanks.com

They will get posted to:

http://www.photography.dudley-hanks.com/Light-And-Sight/index.html

However, sometimes I get a bit busy, so it might take me a day or so to get
them up for you.  Also, my site gets used for a variety of purposes, so I
can't guarrantee how long I'll leave them up.

Take Care,
Dudley

Hehehe!  Obviously a person of impecable taste!
;)

Nevr used mine in those modes, too many things on
auto for myt taste.  One of the things I found with the D80
is its disconcerting habit of changing the matrix meter
pattern to match the focusing point it picks!  I just
throw the af into manual select and meter with CW or spot...

Yay!

Since it was a gift you can still probably trade it in for a proper
camera.
I understand Toys R' Us has a generous refund policy.

Perhaps you should consider that yourself, after all
your 40d was a gift as well, wasn't it?
