Slide viewer screen

I have an old slide viewing system^1 Simon SVS 5822 which rear projects
an image to a screen which is damaged.

The screen's material is clear lucite with a front film for image
diffusion.  That screen diffusion film was damaged by some kind of
chemical reaction with its included shroud type plastic cover during a
long time in unused storage.

I'm trying to replace the approximately 8" x 8" (20x20 cm) screen with
something which will function similarly for viewing, and I haven't had
any luck so far with the local camera store, glass store, or plastic
materials shop.

If I can find satisfactory material for the rear projection diffusion,
it needs to be cut precisely to fit into the viewing system.  Or maybe
there is such a thing as a film which could be applied to clear glass or
plastic.  So far I haven't found a frosted glass which would work;  it
seems that obscuring glass these days is coarsely rough instead of
finely granular.

^1 If you want to get a view of what I'm talking about, here's some
pictures from one advertised for sale on ebay

Have you tried a repair shop ? Maybe someone has a replacement screen
sitting on a shelf, it's worth a few phone calls. If there are no parts to be
found just buy one on ebay.

There are several diffusion materials you can try:

o Rear projection screen material, about $25/sq foot, search www

o Rosco screen: search B&H for 'Rosco frost', about $5.50 for a
20x24 sheet.  Buy a Rosco swatch book, the large one, and find
the one you dislike the least or take a gamble: try 103 or 112.
The small swatch books are $0.01 but are mysteriously always
out of stock.  Try your local theatrical supply.  Lee makes
 a comparable product line.

o Mylar drafting film.  It comes in 8.5x11 & 9x12" sheets with
various amounts of frosting and with the frosting on one
side or both.  See a drafting supplies or blueprint store.
Less than $1, unless they make you buy a ream of 100 sheets -
explain what you want it for and they may have a suitable scrap.
You used to be able to get a sampler with a 22x34" sheet of
each type, free, but those days are gone.

o Wax paper.  Give it a try.  Not the best for wide angle
 viewing.
