Does it make sense to use a camera like a 40D as a backup/complement to a
FF, like the 5D?  Seems that the 40D would offer extra reach with telephoto
lenses, costs less than another 5D.

Thanks.

This newsgroup is for 35mm film photography.

It was......but has adapted to the real world where 35mm film today is
almost non existing!

In general, to devote a whole newsgroup to one particular type of
photographic sensing plane is pretty restrictive.....Basically, there is
little difference between 35 mm cameras and small hand held digital
cameras....They both produce the same results, and require the same
auxiliary equipment (lenses,  tripods, carry bags, and etc.) in order to get
those results. What does it matter whether a photograph I see on my computer
was taken with film and then digitized by a film scanner, or whether it was
digitized directly inside the camera? In either case, I can't see it on my
computer unless it is digitized by something, somewhere along the way. And,
should I not want digitized photos, then I would be restricted to living at
my local camera store, which is about what my father had to do.

You should have written this response to "Yoshi"......and not to me.
I don't care how the final output is created (film or digital).

I was responding to this statement:
"This newsgroup is for 35mm film photography"

No mention of "film' in the group name. We are discussing 35mm sized
sensors.

<pedant>
Therefore the 40D, being a non-full frame sensor is off topic...

I knew that was coming as soon as I posted it.
But since the 40D is part of Canon's 35mm-based DSLR system and uses
the same lenses as my 35mm Fabulous EOS-1V, I guess I'll keep posting
here.

The Tessina 35 uses 35mm film with a frame size of 14mm x 21mm, not
far off the 40D's 15mm x 22mm.

No.  It's for 35mm format camera equipment from which most DSLR cameras
are derived.

IAC if the NG were limited to film only users it would get quite quiet
in here very fast.

Digital SLR shooters have rec.photo.digital and
rec.photo.digital.slr-systems. Why do they need to come to this group
as well?

To prevent any sensible discussion about film photogtaphy, of course!

If you try to discuss film here, they wade in with ludicrous
statements such as "film is dead" and "digital is better", neither of
which are true!  But it has the desired effect, and cuts short any
discussion about film.

There are other good film forums that you can sign up to use, such as
the Analog Photography Users Group:

To me it makes perfect sense as long as you can get the "angle of view" you
need (wide angle).

Of course it does.  In that scenario, I'd consider the 5D as the
backup.

It can be a good complement, if you do sports photography (for example),
the x1,6 crop factor can be helpfull !
