OLYMPUS OM-2 SHUTTER PROBLEM...

I have just aquired a OLYMPUS OM-2. This is not my normal brand of SLR
and don't quite know all the workings of it.

The shutter seems to be stuck on all speeds except when it is on bulb
- the it will open and close with the shutter button.  If you click on
say 1000 it will open and then you have to move the ring to B in order
for the shutter to close again.  Am I missing a step or other button
on this camera or does it require major work.  (FYI, I paid $20.00 for
the body, four lenses and a flash.)

Thanks in advance...

Sounds like a nice simple flat battery problem. The OM2 requires 2 x 1.5v
356/AG13/10L14 type batteries to operate the shutter. No batteries equates
to a apparently dead camera.
Its a beautiful piece of hardware, I have a couple of them and I'm a Nikon
man both film & digital.

Check the batteries. If it was made for silver oxide batteries
it will work with alkeline ones if they are fresh. If they are
not, the battery test may still say they are ok, but they are not.

Al-

That sounds like the problem I had when I tried the single Lithium
battery that was supposed to replace the two Silver Oxide cells.

At first it appeared to work, but malfunctioned after a few shots.
Changing back to Silver Oxide solved the problem.

Thank you to everyone who replied - the problem was a dead battery
(rookie mistake)... the camera works fine now - well worth the
$20.00...

You can check out the OM FAQ at:
http://brashear.phys.appstate.edu/lhawkins/photo/olympus.faq.html#ques_B2

Hopefully you used the silver oxide SR44 / 357 batteries.  Don't use
alkaline, they don't work as well or as long and the voltage drop off in
them will cause incorrect meter readings and other intermittent bugs
before they finally give out.  Same is true for lithium.

If you dive in too deep on the OM side of things you may want to check

Check out http://zuserver2.star.ucl.ac.uk/~rwesson/esif/om-sif.htm for further
Olympus-OM-related stuff ;-)
It houses a plethora of information...

Is the battery good?
