I guess it's official now. The 40D doesn't take any better pictures
than a 30D.
When you hit Canon (AU)s web site about the 40D and click on "sample
images" they show you 30D examples!
Phew... I'm sure glad to hear that. For a while there I was
considering buying a couple to replace to aging 20Ds. I guess the
$1990 (AUD) price is only because they can't improve on the 20D and
need to dupe the public again!

More megapixels, faster shooting, sensor dust removal, 14-bit
processing, larger LCD screen .... those are serious improvements over
the 20D. The US price is listed as $1299, which is less than I paid
for my 20D.
Quite a value if you ask me.

The only "value" is the sensor dust removal and the deeper shadow detail
possibility (14bit). The Live Preview and changeable focus screens may
hold some use for you too. Other than that you'll get a paltry 11%
resolution increase over the 20D...
Cheers,
Alan

Oh yeah! That waterproof battery compartment is a great idea. I wonder
if it'll be watertight at 30 metres like my old Olympus is?
My supplier won't even take orders for one!

It's weatherproof not waterproof. Which means you couldn't submerge
the camera.
"Weatherproof compartment doors
We're looking for an exact clarification on this point, it appears
that while Canon has now weatherproofed the battery and storage
compartment doors (water and dust can't enter these compartments when
the doors are closed) other areas such as buttons and dials aren't
fully weatherproofed as they are on the EOS-1D series. Hence while the
EOS 40D's weatherproofing is an improvement over the EOS 30D it
doesn't appear to be up to EOS-1D standards."
