Don't ask me to choose a fave because I couldn't, but this one is up there. Superb color, beautiful detail and tack sharp. So delicate with that creamy bokeh. Simply put it's GORGEOUS! Thanks for sharing your pics with us. Believe me, I'm sadder than you that you don't own this lens. :( Helen

Unfortunately I was pushed to the point this morning. I've been quite ill and after reading his asinine post, I wasn't very charming or nice at all. Not me at all, but it proves that even a lamb has a bit of lion in them when pushed. Thanks, Helen

I wouldn't know how to photoshop if my life depended on it. As for the pic in question, it was emailed to me with a message of urgency that the subject in the pic had his grandchildren involved in such vile behaviour. I've heard so much about that tragedy and often wonder if she had friends who stood by her side. Sadly experience has taught me the reality of so-called friends. It was a classy move she made by just dropping out of the group and keeping her dignity in tact. Damn good idea in my opinion. Helen
William Graham - 05 Aug 2007 22:43 GMT > Tony...wasn't she making pornographic pictures for her alter ego a little > while ago? Porn producers are the bottom of the dung pile. There are quite a few fine photographers, and motion picture directors that first got into the business because of their huge sex drives and desire to do porn....Then, after a while, they became so interested in the photography that it overshadowed the porn, and they became famous in the art form........So, even porn has its good points......:^)
Tony Polson - 05 Aug 2007 23:05 GMT >Tony...wasn't she making pornographic pictures for her alter ego a >little while ago? Porn producers are the bottom of the dung pile. Don't be ridiculous. I think what you wrote above is more indicative of the state of your own mind than anything else.
This newsgroup has a sorry record when it comes to making women photographers welcome. We lost Lisa Horton several years ago due to some gratuitous unpleasantness, and it seems that some people on here have learnt nothing from that.
If Helen and Bret have each found a friend on here, so what? There is no reason to criticise that fact, or the people concerned. Helen's gushing praise might be just a little over the top but so are many of Bret's postings (WHO RULES?). One is an appropriate response to the other.
They both bring something positive to the newsgroup. Do you?

Helen and I are indeed good friends thanks to the newsgroups. If that upsets some jealous types then sucks for them.

When the 'gushing praise' becomes as predictable as Old Faithful, certain gagging reflexes start rearing their ugly little heads.
The totality of my contributions to this group have been mediocre or neutral at best. That's the result of pointing out senseless banality and deeply ingrained sycophancy.
On a brighter note, I've never posted someone else's picture and tried to pass it off as my own work, so there must be at least one redeeming characteristic in here somewhere.

Your anti-Semitic remarks toward Helen were a memorable contribution to the group. Why Helen's praises of my pics cause you grief, especially enough grief to attack her, are a subject that might be worthy of study ... if anybody gave a sh.t what a lowlife scumbag such as yourself thought.
But so far, your contributions have either been attacking Helen or attacking me for showing how to improve one of your sorry photographic efforts and for posting the improved version on my pbase site (with appropriate links in this newsgroup). I never claimed that your photo was taken by me as you imply. Hell, my dog takes better pictures.

Afraid that no one else will like your images? Besides your mother? Maybe the reaction to Bret's work isn't over the top and Ms Helen is truely inspired by his work.
> The totality of my contributions to this group have been mediocre or > neutral at best. That's the result of pointing out senseless banality > and deeply ingrained sycophancy. A total of your contributions to the group makes the KKK like a bible study group. Having to point out things that other reconize shows how little you consider the mentality of this group. And so what it Ms Helen gives praise to those who's photographs brighten her day. I for one enjoy see another give praise to another. To little of that is done these days.

If this is a brighter note for you then, you must live in a lot of darkness. Only redeeming thing that you could do is apologize to Ms Helen. But then you can't help being a total a.s. Now can you?

For the more "advanced" this includes backing up ones claims with proof. The more extraordinary the claim, the greater the proof required.

Far be it for me to hold off on criticism but it really is time this group got re-invented. The 300 people who looked at my site last month is clear evidence there are plenty of lurkers about who are scared off by the antics of a few.
Tony does have a very comprehensive knowledge of camera gear. His ability to infuriate Alan Browne and a few others (me included) is something I believe he aquired about the time Alan Browne got his nose out of joint from a comment Tony made and it's never stopped. Give it up both of you. You are doing the whole group a terrible disservice with your childish rubbish.

Tony, give it a rest. You know damn well that is a nice shot. As for the bokeh, well, it is what it is and it doesn't detract from the image. Honestly there are a few harsh points in there, but you are going to have that with the 85/1.2L (II). This is not Bret's fault. I rate it as an extremely nice shot and I wish that he didn't have to send the 85 back. Trust me, I would rather see him use an 85/1.4 Nikkor instead, but Bret is one of the very few people that can get the 85/1.2L (II) to work so nicely.

Oh, and I love Bret's wildlife and macro shots just as much as Helen, even the ones that might be that good. It's all fun and I'm glad Bret is having fun.

Great job. Excelant sharpness, great color, OOF background makes the critter leap off the page.
Keep at it Bret. The testing of the equipment and showing the resulting images are what this NG is about.
Thank you.

This qualifies for weird bokeh I think.

I thought that you owned this lens (one I would like to try myself as well, but lens and camera rentals aren't *that* advanced here in Greece :-( ).

No, I own the lowly 85mm f/1.8. But hey, tomorrow's my birthday so you never know....
Nick Fotis - 14 Aug 2007 00:42 GMT > No, I own the lowly 85mm f/1.8. By the way, what are your impressions with this lens? Seems like a nice lens for indoor use (I know, it's not as impressive as the f/1.2 lens, but I suspect it's pretty useable).

Unless you just have to shoot below f/1.8 I doubt you'd ever notice a difference between it and the f/1.2L. The f/1.8 is also MUCH lighter and easier to hold for long stretches. It also doesn't call attention to itself as it looks like a normal lens. Having said all that, it is true that CHICKS DIG THE BIG GLASS!
