Damn, Boy!  You got these so over-Photoshopped that they look like cartoon
animations.  I'm sorry to say it, but the quality of your images is really
regressing, which is a disappointment to me.  Start doing it proper
in-camera and you will find you need Photoshop less.

I have to disagree with ya Rita.  Bret's work is greatly improving.
He's showing a good photographer's eye.  He is not lazy but any
means.  He goes above and beyond to get that certain shot, and nails
it too.  I don't know a single person who knows their camera more than
he knows his. Honest.  I've said it many times and I'll say it again,
his work is of the same caliber, and with some pics, better than
National Geographic photographers.

Are you sure you aren't Bret?  Either that or you have a pair of wild
cataracts interfering with your eyesight.  I don't want to believe the
claims of others that say you are.  I like Brets's pics, but you have to
admit that the ones I mentioned looked atrocious and so heavily Photoshopped
that they look like animated cartooned dog sh.t.  Bret knows better than
to pass "painted-in"crap like that off to us.

That's what I want to know.  I'm the first to admit I am no expert on
photoshop.  But I don't see the things Rita sees.  And no, I don't
have cataracts either.  My vision is excellent thank you.  As far as
being Bret, well figgy has put up my IP address so many times for
everyone to see....................isn't that proof enough of who I am
and where I come from?

I really don't care.  The issue is you are getting equally gushy about
images that are great and ones that are pure Photoshopped crap.  This leads
me to believe your bias towards Bret is so much that you wear blinders.  No
biggy, just be honest with yourself and all will become apparent.

I admit that I do not have a trained eye for photoshop touch-ups,
unless it's very obvious, than I couldn't spot it.  When I give
comments on Bret's work it's honest.  I admit I get too gushy, but
that's just me.  I see other people's work as well and comment on them
accordingly, but to me they do not compare to Bret's work.  I like
Bret, he's a good friend.  But I honestly believe he is  the best
nature and wildlife photographer.  I have yet to see a pic of Bret's
that was bad.  When it comes to hummingbirds, Eric Miller is tops.
Whether you or anyone else on this NG think anything else, is your
problem.  I just don't care anymore.

Jusr remember this, Helen .... you are arguing with a troll whose one

LOL!  Remember we talked about "targeted audience" before?  This is all you
get.  Maybe a troll, but I got you figured out and it really pisses you off.
And yet you have not been able to match the beautiful bokeh of the old Noct
with those third rate L lenses you use.  I'm glad you liked the
yellow-throated warbler.  It really must suck knowing you are using garbage
for equipment and can't get it right in-camera so you have to cheat in
Photoshop.

As the late, great Richard Pryor would say, "I ain't got to show you
sh.t!'

But, in the interest of fairness and making you look like a dumbass
here is the RAW file:
http://members.aol.com/annika1980/_IMG_8227.cr2

Now maybe you can explain what it is that I supposedly "painted in?"

You're right you don't, but you know you have a burning desire to do so.

Thank you.  First off, due to my limited bandwidth I'll post an unaltered
1024 and a cropped version of your supposed "unaltered" RAW file (I will
remove tomorrow morning).  Secondly, what I can see from the image you
posted you did a severe crop as I suspected you did.  It looks like you did
a drastic noise reduction scheme that makes this image look like viewing on
a monitor with only 16-colors.  You didn't need to reduce the noise.  Pixel
for pixel I would have cropped as you did and not apply any post as it
really wasn't needed.  You f.cked this image up in Photoshop.  My unaltered
1024 version looks better at 200% than the crap you posted on pbase.  Do
yourself a favor and go lightly on the Photoshop since it detracts from a
good image.

My 1024

<http://www.geocities.com/ritaberk2007/pics/bret.jpg>

Here's the unaltered cropped version fairly close in size to yours.  Even
with the noise and lack of adjustment it looks more natural.

<http://www.geocities.com/ritaberk2007/pics/bret_cropped.jpg>

Your overprocessed plastic looking pile of crap.

Enjoy!

The other one looked more smeary from noise reduction but here's my
quick stab at analyzing it: http://edgehill.net/temp/bret
The first one is yours, the third was my attempt to match (too much
shadows, wrong WB with CS1 max noise reduction, much increased
contrast), the middle one is default ACR settings, both of my versions
were reduced 71% with USM radius 0.3 & 150%

My attempt still has significantly more noise, the default still has a
bit more detail. I know you sometimes use a technique that I sometimes
use: 2 layers, one noise reduced & mask out the detailed part to give a
smooth as butter background, I can see the noise around the lower
whiskers where I suspect you used this technique.

Overall your version looks real good, I wasn't able to easily match it!
Consider it a compliment that I went to the trouble. Thanks for the
opportunity to examine it.

You can click my versions for un-resharpened full pixel crops or go
here: http://edgehill.net/temp/bret/crop to compare.

I must say that your version looks a lot better to me even though you are
sadly getting close to what Bret did.  I would skip the aggressive attempts
to reduce noise and work that image with curves.  Noise really isn't as evil
as people make it out to be and can work in your favor.  Bret's anal
fixation with Photoshop is what is ruining a perfectly good image.

I added a fourth version without trying to match anybody, starting with
the default raw conversion, and as you suggest with curves masked to
retain the nice green background) though I probably would have done more
in the raw conversion than with curves, CS3 has curves in the raw
converter, I'm on CS1. Then I de-noised the background & masked that out
with a very fine eraser on the whiskers, I got sloppy on the bottom
whiskers too so you can see them with a cloud of grit.

Bret did go a little heavy on contrast but not bad at all. Send me your
version & I'll post it cropped to match for comparison.

Especially when it appears monochrome as in some manufacturer's products.

Number 2 was by far the best and most natural photo. The others, particularly
numbers 1 and 3 looked crap.

I think the one's you were talking about were full pixel crops or nearly
so. That's just the normal Canon noise reduction smearing <grin>.

LOL!  I'm aware of Canon's noise reduction smearing, but this goes well
beyond that.  This is pure garbage.  I think Bret needs a 5D and a Mk III
with a few Nikkors.

I'm with Rita on this one: the "original" size images look like you
put a bath-shower-glass filter between you and the rodent.  Kind of
looks like one of the PS "artistic" filters, maybe a la Monet?

Is that a result of downsizing then upsizing?
