I finally got to see "At Close Range" on PBS last night.  I did not
see anyone include the PBS links to this program last time around
so...
http://www.pbs.org/atcloserange/

I particularly enjoyed the clip of him arguing with a NG photo
editor:
It's artistically blurred.
No, it's out of focus.

And the clip of the rodeo, where he had another guy haul him out of
the way by the tail of his photo vest, when the wild horses were too
close; i.e. head kicking range.

The story of being surrounded by wolves was priceless.

Hmm.  Maybe film is not dead.

Part of the interview suggested that he was one of the last NG
photographers that was still using film.  So for *this application* I
think film is pretty close to dead.  Now having said that, some of the
Jpeg artifacts and color noise from digital images that have been
published in NG have been absolutely hideous; to the point of making
me wonder what the editors were thinking, if at all.

One of his (Sartore) comments really stuck in my head was how he
would, after picking up slides, stop at every stoplight on the way
back to the office and go through the slides.  All I could think was
"If that part is so exciting for you; why haven't you migrated to
digital for the *right now* effect?"

I've done that.  A 50mm f/1.8 works well as a loupe when held up to
the sky.

Jim,

You're a typical teenager - instant gratification.  ;-)

I'm actually a triple teenager; I'm beginning to want things
yesterday. :-)

I suspect it is the computers, I can remember when to learn something
you would go to the library and read a book on the subject, now you
just "Ask" and the computer will spit something at you.  Anybody
remember gofer? Surf the web indeed! :-)

Yes! After using my first e-mail program (written by one of my
students in Algol for a 4-machine Northstar micro network), the
implementation of Usenet and Gofer, and my use of them to solve
problems helped me realize what was about to happen to those isolated
mainframe islands.

Cheers,

Well then again maybe it is, a quote from his web page
"These days, I only use digital cameras. "

Thanks for the link to the PBS site. I didn't know  Joel Sartore was
still with NG. He is one of the best I have had the pleasure to have
met. Very polite, funny and willing to talk photography with almost
anyone.
