Hopefully more people will join in, Jim.  There are always late

Done.
SI2@jlkra.... right? I was too lazy to look it up :-) It wasn't shot for
the mandate but I think was within the legal time frame.

What better example of this mandate than to simply be too damned lazy to
even submit an archive shot? To me it's the perfect response. The summer
doldrums have set in...

replaced.

Sigh.   Time to submit an oldie.

It's bad enough that only a handful of people submitted to the SI, but
no critiques either?  :(

you found a model that was down for the task and prepared

Seriously I like your BW shot for this mandate. He might wake

LOL.  Thanks Walter.  He was the easiest subject to shoot.  He woke up
briefly for just a moment.  He didn't move he just asked if I wanted a
drink.  I declined, he shrugged and went back to sleep.

Clever interpretation of the mandate. Normal focal length sure can look
weird for architecture sometimes and that's really noticeable because of
the oblique viewing angle here but I think it's well executed. Again,
the intent of the photo is supposed to be unsettling.

Helen Silverberg - Drunk Man, Passed Out
http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/82785041
Great shot! The cropping is a bit odd, but maybe that's OK because it's
not the sort of scene that's supposed to make you feel comfortable.
Canonet is a rangefinder?

LOL is that a feather in the lower-right? Somebody sleeping off a well
earned songbird meal... :-) As with the others, the exposure is right
on, this is a tough subject. The distractions on the left bug me though.

I took a lot of shots this day, many came out well, this was one of the
best, largely due to the cute factor but I think it's a pretty competent
capture. Full pixel crop & more of the shoot here:

Thanks Paul.  Yes the Canonet QL17 Glll is a rangefinder.  I had a
hard time choosing a fave.  Bowser's Capitol Building is a great
shot.  So is Jim's pic of his cat.  It fit into the Mandate perfectly
along with those cute Elephant Seals and Solomon's shot of that cute
pig.

Much as I appreciate the joke of slothful government, IMO Congress isn't
a good choice because they're simply too active.  Just imagine how much
better off we'd be if Congress got half as much done as they do now.  :)

But back to the photo -- it's well framed and due to the perspective,
looks rather ominous.

> Helen Silverberg - Drunk Man, Passed Out

One thing I didn't expect from this mandate was to feel guilty... but at
the same time I was wishing for a stick for a "is it alive?" poke.

The best of the lot, in my opinion.

> Jim Kramer - Black Cat in a Coal Mine

Aww, what other animal could epitomize both sloth and hypertension?
It's cute, but I'm so desinsitized that it doesn't make the cut for me.

My original plan (before my wife bricked my D70) was to stalk one of my
(five) cats, two of whom like to sleep on their backs.

I love this!  It definately wins the 'most pathetic' award.  A large
mass of smaller large gelatinous blobs that actually claim to be alive.

...but in this case, it has them every day.  It's hard work, being a

Thanks Stuffed Crust.  I was afraid to poke him.  I had seen him

Thanks Bret!  Coming from you I'm truly humbled.  As far as being a

Is your real name Helen Cartier-Bresson?
There's a lot of HCB in that pic.
You have captured more in that one frame than Rocha has in all his sorry
attempts at street photography.

Fair enough as a joke, but as a photo this doesn't work very well for me.
The trees, the shadow, the people, the tilt ... don't come together in a
harmonious or interesting way for me. If discord was the intent, it doesn't
lead me to sloth.

Helen Silverberg - Drunk Man, Passed Out
http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/82785041

What a find! Well done. The distorted face and oversized pants add a
cartoonish element. The bottle cap in the right hand reminds me of
Michelangelo's David holding his rock. I'd like him to have a little more
headroom and space on the left of the frame, so he's not so crowed into the
top left.

Jim Kramer - Black Cat in a Coal Mine

Eliminating distractions from the background would make this work better for

Life is full of distractions, they remind us we're alive and not in a
blissful paradise. :-)

Underpants? What are those? I believe that was the remnants of a
plastic grocery sac that the lazy sac had been destroying prior to his
idyllic drooling nap.

I had this exact conversation with someone else :-)

The problem is I know that the black cat is black, that the dark grey
chair is really dark gray.  It is (in my mind) supposed to be dark.

Now having said all that have a look at (Peter Boorman's site)

http://www.bard-hill.co.uk/CalibrationSheetDownload.html

Follow the directions and download the Calibration Sheet.  Open it up
and look at the blacks column.  When can't you distinguish the blacks
apart anymore? I suspect the 91-100% all run together and it is pretty
hard to tell 90 from 80?  That being the case, you don't see the image
the way I do on my monitor and I don't see the image you put up the
way you do on mine.  Try adjusting your monitor see what you've been
missing. :-)

I agree.  As a matter of fact it bothered me, because I distinctly
remember checking all four corners of the frame to make sure I
composed it properly, remembering I left room at the top, as I wanted
to add a bit of the doorway he passed out in front of.  I checked the
negative and I was right.  The lab cropped off a bit too much on the
top. I didn't notice until I got home, and I was too exhausted to go
back to the lab, which is miles away from where I live.  I left it as
it is.  But if I ever have it enlarged, I'll make sure I'm specific
about what not to crop out.
Thanks for your comments Wilba!  :)

Don't ya hate that?! I took some photos at a Dire Straits concert in the mid
80s. It looked fantastic in the postcard print from the developing lab, all
saturated and silhouettey, but the 10x8 I ordered came back all washed out
and grainey with a band member cut in half.

You want to believe it!  Too many times I've had my pics ruined by a

I had tried to get just enough of the combs/hands in the image to show
what was going on, so while I might be able to crop it slightly more,
they were very much intended to be there.

Here's the same hog about a year later:

 http://www.shaftnet.org/po/photo.php?photo=17864&ver=17786

It just doesn't have the same impact as the first, mainly because the
kids (&combs) aren't there.  The hog does look somewhat worse for the
wear, though..

This was my other archival consideration for the SI:

Yes, and its name is.. wait for it.. "Itsy."

Pot Bellied pigs are pretty docile, and that's a good thing when when
you're relegated to the horrid, appalling existance of suffering through
daily spa treatments at the hands of children in a petting zoo.

I mean, you can just see Itsy thinking, "I'm going to kill each and
every one of those @^$%^ people, starting with the one pointing that
camera at me...ooo, that feels good...I'd have to get up...maybe after
lunch... wait, that's naptime... hmmm.. ooooh, that feels good..."

Awww poor Itsy.  But I'm sure he enjoys the petting and people rubbing
where he can't reach to relieve an itch.  He has food and water
brought to him and can sleep anytime he wants.  Life is good for
Itsy!  Not too many pigs get that kind of luxury.

Fair enough, but these kids weren't particularly photogenic.   I tried
