Not entirely true Colin.
Old - As in pre DSLR era lenses will cause problems with some EOS
cameras. Any Sigma lens with an EX DG specification (the only ones
able to resolve enough for a Mk III) will not cause err 99. Flash
cards too slow will do it as will changing from a heavy power drain
lens to a wide, low power drain one will do it too. I suppose you do
realize Rita is Nikoholic?

It also afflicted the early 20D as well. As for the "Nikoholic" that simple
isn't true. I've been a Canon shooter since the old FD days. I've used
both platforms then and I am doing so now. It's the "it's hard to get
decent Canon glass," that rules out L glass for 5D owners. The Mk III is
changing that with the "AF Adjustment" feature.

Aaaahh, maybe I should have said Sigma lenses 'may' cause problems. It
appears to be a reasonably common problem, where said lenses work on
some bodies, but throw a 99 error on newer bodies, hence the re-chipping
service by Sigma.
Nikoholic? Rita?? never! he just extols Nikon glass on Canon bodies {:-)

That's a point of consideration, but I'm not sure someone would spend $4,000
on a dSLR and put a Sigma on it. I think there were a few other issues
people were having besides the old "99" error. From what I recall this was
caused by dirty lens contacts in the earlier models. Usually cleaning of
the lens and body contacts cured this. The Mk III according to one poster
was/is being sent in for servicing. This might be a bit more serious.

You might well be right, but it seems to me that a buyer of a III would
be upgrading from another Canon (I can't see many people buying a III
from a cold start), and will have lenses already, maybe a Sigma or two
that worked on their former model. Who knows? People who complain
about things like this frequently leave out the vital snippet of info
that holds the clue.

Rumor has it '99' can come up with no lens at all
mounted on the camera.

The first word of that sentence sums up the reliability of the full
statement...

And if you looked up, "Error 99" in Nikon's book, it would say. "There is no
lens on the camera."
