I'll be in and out today so "late" submissions will take some time to be posted.

Ken Nadvornick - 13 Jun 2007 04:37 GMT > Late Submission = A shot taken after seeing how good/bad > the opposition is and deciding you can do better! Or maybe also = Pre-scouting your location for the effect of lighting conditions on the subject, cleaning and loading film holders, returning with large format field camera, schlepping camera, schlepping enormous heavy wooden tripod, schlepping all of the other required stuff out to the site, setting up at pre-scouted locations, carefully metering composing and exposing sheet film, making notes of everything, packing everything back up to return to the darkroom, unloading holders, mixing chemistry, processing negatives, proofing and printing negatives, cleaning up the darkroom, drying prints, scanning and adjusting the digital scan so it kinda-sorta resembles the real print, then emailing to Jim just so everyone can spend 10 seconds looking at it before flipping to the next image...
But also experiencing the extreme satisfaction of knowing that the final image was truly made by me with my own imagination and hands, and not some programmer's algorithm in a WM_MOUSEDOWN event handler.

And even if it were, the road less traveled would be the same - minus only some weight.

If digital photography is a New York minute, then large format film photography is the Geologic Timescale. (First the Earth cooled, then the dinosaurs ruled, then I snapped the shutter...)

Like all youngsters, He has his own life and although he does anything I ask, I really can't expect him to drop his own social life to help me carry gear around... Surely you can understand that Helen?

I find that with my Wista 4x5, it isn't the amount of gear that's the real issue, it's finding the extra half an hour to set up the shot!

Maybe we need to have a mandate just for large format... In a newsgroup originally created for 35mm film... Whose participants almost exclusively use digital...
Actually, I was already aware you both had 'em. You just need to use 'em more often for the SI. Michael, is yours one of the early Zone VI models like mine? An early Wista DXII (no back shift)?
And Douglas, is yours one of those all metal Toyo fields? CF, AX or AII? I'm looking hard at the 810MII, but the price is daunting.
I have an absolutely magnificent image scoped out for "Loss(t)" but unfortunately it is accessable only by boat -- and I know no one with such a device. If I could get there, though, I'd be thrilled to hump all of the equipment needed.

It's also the set up, the time we take to compose that shot we want. Carrying our equipment until it feels like our arms are going to fall off. It's such a satisfying feeling to know you worked to get that ultimate shot. I've dreamed of using a large format camera for years. I don't care how heavy it is. http://museumoftherockies.org/photoarc/schlechten/X80.6.395-sm.jpg Helen

I did shoot my "Not Quite Obsolete" shot with it, but I ran into deadline pressure and submitted the D200 version instead. The 4x5" version made a nice 24x30" print, though.
I've got a 120mm AM-Nikkor that I'm itching to try, so if the right mandate comes up I'll use that as an excuse. Currently,my only ideas for "loss" are so lame that I may have to pass.

Most of whom spend way too much time at the computer arguing the merits of minutia instead of out taking any kind of photographs.

Doug your ship is in dire need of...a new boat. Dang that was a nice shot of decay along the water. The bolards and the winch are still reconizable but are nasty looking. Good job.
Draco
Getting even isn't good enough.
Doing better does.

It's one of the "Tangalooma wrecks". Old dredges that were sunk to create a reef when the whaling station was disbanded on moreton Island. I'm not sure but I think it happened in the late '50s.
It's now a paradise underwater. Visibility almost always 20 to 30 feet and it looks like an aquarium with all the coloured fish. You can swim out to them from the beach or hire a dingy. No need to wonder why I live there when you see this sort of stuff.
