I'm curious to discover what people's monitors are registering/not
registering in terms of shadow details and highlight details.
Please indicate a whether you can read the text in each of the following:
Dark image sample:

Light image sample:

This becomes significant when discussing some aspets of photos that are
shared here.
Thanks for you input...and...no cheating! :)

I can see both, tho the highlight is harder to see, and I'm on my
laptop that I haven't callibrated in like six months.. I'll have to
check on my photo-editing machine later.

The darker image should be fairly easy to see.
Try this one and tell me what is visible. There are lines of text in it:

I could read neither....So, I saved the images, and imported them into
Photoshop, and then clicked on "auto levels"....This "fixed" the problem, so
I could read the text in both images....I guess I should calibrate my
monitor, but I don't know how...There is no adjustment on the front panel
for doing this, so unless it can be done completely in software, I haven't
got the slightest idea how I would do it.......

There is often a button hidden under the front power switch with a 4-way
menu navigator as well as right-clicking your desktop & going into the
video card contrast & gamma adjustments. If you have photoshop, there
will be an adobe gamma tool in the start>settings>control panel that
leads you through making these adjustments... it's easy to make a mess
without the adobe gamma loader wizard routine. I've got dual screens
with the second being my laptop & the primary an oldish 21" CRT and it
has been hell trying to get the laptop LCD anywhere close to the CRT.
Adobe gamma isn't really designed for LCDs.
Here's another great test screen to work with which I ran across in
these groups: http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php

Thanks.....I have an old Sony 21 inch CRT type monitor, and I have no
controls under or near the on-off switch.....I was looking at a HD lcd
display the other day for around $500.....Maybe I'll buy it, but it will
have to have some way of calibrating it before I spring for that much
money.....:^)

But to get to the video card settings in windows:

In the first test, I can see the shadows, but no highlites. Just like in
real life. The "photofriday" shows up perfect. I suspect the problem lies in
too many tests. Bob Hickey

During the day when my office is very bright I can't make out the dark
one, once the sun is down it is very easy to read.
The light on light one I can read but just in both the day time and
night.
I tend to do my photos edits at night since my screen does get washed
out pretty bad.

I can read the dark text easily but I can't see anything in the light
text at all. Experimenting with images of my own, I can read text on
a black background down to 0x06 and on a light background up to 0xfc.
Your light image is just out of reach.

Dark: no problem
Light: not discernible on laptop; barely so on CRT.

Same here. I also agree it makes a difference if the room is dark, the
dark one is real easy to see. Here's a version I did in a daylit room
that made the light text equally discernable:
http://www.edgehill.net/temp/calibrate.jpg
I can just barely read the light text in a dark room, the OP I could
just barely tell there was text at all. In a dark room the dark text is
easy to read, takes some effort in a light room.

can just about make the text.

had a bit of difficulty with this one. very faint maths... :-)
but both are visible/readable to me. Just. Right on the edge of what
my
monitor can do.
