I swapped my 70-200mm F2.8 IS for one for about an hour...
It is a vast improvement over the 75-300 USM IS F4.5-5.6 in terms of
focus speed and image quality. Still has the extending front section :-

The minimum focus distance is listed as 4.9 feet (1.5M)
A short extension tube will change that drastically.
Having said that, look at the 100mm Canon Macro lens. Much better for
closeup work, Much better!

Thanks much for the info. She mostly shoots at the long end of the
70-300 with fewer macro shots, so the macro is somewhat secondary.
And the macro lens I really lust after is the MP-E 65mm f/2.8,
although it would not be that good for flowers.
