The autofocus on my Nikon D50 just stopped working a few months ago.
Yesterday I think somebody might of pointed out the problem to me.
When you turn the lens to zoom in/out, the lens 'sticks' at the 35 marker,
and it takes quite a bit of force to make the zoom turn past that mark.
Obviously the autofocus can't apply that force so autofocus won't work.
But wait. I just thought of something. Does autofocus actually turn the
zoom? Or just the focus ring? Anyway, autofocus has stopped working on my
year-and-a-half year old camera. Any ideas?

No, the autofocus only uses the focus ring. However, your lens definitely
has a problem. It could easily be that whatever damage caused the zoom
problems also causes the focus problem.
The only real way to find out is to send camera and lens to Nikon for
repair.

It sounds like you have a DX lens and they don't have a good build
quality. I've run into the same thing myself with a DX lens and have
avoided them ever since.

Interesting. You ran into what "same thing"?
Not knowing the zoom control from the focus or not knowing which lens is in
use?
Since you ran into the "same thing" with "a" DX lens, you derive that "they"
don't have a good build?
Do you sell these crystal balls you use on your Paris photo tours, or are
they for your personal use only?
Since I don't have nor use any DX lenses, I'm interesting in developing this
"all-encompassing insight" you seem to have.
