Kinon O'Cann - 22 Nov 2006 13:17 GMT Small, but good group of photos for this mandate. My comments, as usual, must be taken with huge grains of salt since I really don't know what I'm talking about. A few thoughts:
Michael Benveniste: http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/70573037
Well, there's a lot going here, don't you think? Possible fetishes include revenge, weaponry, media hype, global domination, and so on. I like the shot a lot; good idea, well executed, and it fits the mandate nicely. It also seems very fitting for these perverted times we're living in. Good job, Mike. A+
Bowser: http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/70573093
Yes, I have one. Yes, that's mine. I hate the damned thing, but my employer seems to like to keep me on a leash, so I use it. Like the caption says, Blackberry lust has really gotten silly. Anyway, I took the shot one morning during the commute, since I had decided to use the BB as the central object in the shot, and was looking for a proper setting. So I decided to drag out the camera, mount the fisheye, and see what it looked like. Nobody else on the highway even noticed. They were busy yakking on their own phones. B

Damn, how could I have not considered an MP3 player, especially an iPod, the little darling of the portable music set? I'll tell you how; I bought one, but never see it. My teenage son seems to have monopolized it so I forget it even exists. But iPods, and Zens and now Zunes have achieved fetish status, fer sher. The shot leaves me a little cold, however. I like the composition, but it seems underexposed, or lacking contrast. Kind of dingy and washed out. B-
Duncan Chesley: http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/70573199
Another MP3 player, this time an iPod, what looks like one of the newer black iPod video models. Again, certainly qualifies as a 21st century fetish item. At first glance, I would have liked a little more detail on the iPod, but upon further review (yes, it's football season here in the US) I like it as is. The combination of iPod, screen, and book elements in this arrangement works very well! Good job, Duncan. A-
Jim Kramer: http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/70573231
Well, I assume your fetish item is chat rooms, newsgroups, or some sort of internet-based communication. No question, a fetish item. I would have preferred a more detailed shot of a chat room; one with some type of lurid conversation taking place. You know, the kind of conversation that takes place between US Representatives and Pages, but no such luck here. Not too bad, but it leaves me wanting more. C+.
Al Denelsbeck: http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/70573276
Ah, yes. A digital photo that comments on the banality of digital photography. A comment truly worthy of Mad Magazine, no? Sort of reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Mad (by a "hippie" couple commenting on the latest avant-garde film): "it was incredibly symbolic how the director injected symbolism into scenes symbolically devoid of symbols." How many fetishes? Let me count the ways: chat rooms, bottled water (I still don't get why we pay more for a bottle of water than Coke; must be expensive to take the Coke out of the water), phones, cameras, headsets, technology in general, and extremely noisy digital photos. Crappy photo, but good Bowser points for trying. B
Mardon: http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/70573597
I knew someone in this group would submit a pic of some photo gear! No question, especially for this group, a fetish item. Not tied to this century, but hey, this century is still young, so why not? Technically, not a great shot, though and I would have preferred something utterly razor sharp to depict this fine lens. However, it's not bad at all. B-
Paul Campbell: http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/70594975
Another MP3 player shot, another iPod, the true benchmark of portable players, no question (with all due respect to the other excellent players). All the previous comments regarding iPods and MP3 players apply here, but this shot, taken with such excellent gear is my favorite of the iPod shots, no question. Yes, I know, totally senseless, but I have no intention of trying to make sense in my life. Too much damned work. But the Pentax gear here is wonderful stuff, and reminds me that it was Pentax (Asahi?) that introduced the first multicoated lenses back in the sixties (I think). Anyway, nice arrangement of elements, good placement of the "mug-me white" headphones. Being the sharpness freak, I'd like a sharper pic, but this isn't bad. A-

> Al Denelsbeck: > http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/70573276 [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > extremely noisy digital photos. Crappy photo, but good Bowser points > for trying. B The noise was the part that was unintentional - I had a hard time balancing the ambient lighting to the monitor to allow for the monitor to be seen clearly. As it is, it's a blatant digital cheat, since the pic has been lightened (thus the noise) and the monitor screen boosted in contrast. Is Photoshop a fetish?
Another amusing aspect is how hard I had to scrounge to come up with these, since by nature I indulge in very few fetishes, or fads if you prefer. The cellphone is actually a pay-as-you-go emergency phone my girlfriend gave me that often gets left behind, the water bottle is also hers (that she refills from the tap), the digital camcorder is one I'm attempting to repair for a friend, and the chat is an IM archive from several years ago when that was the only way I could reach a couple of friends during their schooling. The headset I actually use, though - keeps my hands free during 900 calls... ;-)
And you missed one ;-)
I hate just taking a photo to fit the mandate, without trying to make something that stands on its own, but I really had little inspiration for this one and haven't submitted much recently. Tried for a "cultural still life," failed. A B is too generous.
Thanks for commenting!

You said, "cameras," plural, so I'm assuming you got the webcam alongside the candle. Or thought it was a webcam as intended, anyway - it's actually the bottom-end of a fluorescent light bulb with the tip darkened to look more like a lens. I don't have a webcam, either.

I was trying for an image of conflict against a backdrop of 9/11 and internet-based news. Originally, I wanted to borrow a WWII practice bomb from a friend, but my wife convinced me it was unnecessary.
I had the same problems as Al with light balance. A hand held flash helped, but still left the color cast on the walls. The on- screen image had a lot of contrast -- sheer luck of the draw.

Dammit, they always ruin our fun. What is this world coming to when a guy can't borrow a bomb from a friend? Besides, the activity last night in Danvers may have obviated the need for your bomb. I bet you felt it... I'm 12 miles away and it woke me up.

The blast woke me out of a sound sleep, but the house only shook a little bit. I think I was about 6 miles away. For those wondering what we're talking about, see: http://cbs4boston.com/topstories/local_story_326060222.html

scenic_man - 23 Nov 2006 15:08 GMT > Depleted uranium? <cringe> Cringe? Nah. Great stuff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depleted_uranium#Civilian_applications Some people use it to add weight to very small (1:160 scale) model locomotives to add traction. Does a great job.
Michael Benveniste - 23 Nov 2006 18:14 GMT >> My wife is the one who bought me the M735 projectile. > >Depleted uranium? <cringe> Fortunately not. This one's from a practice round and is made of steel. While it weighs about 8 pounds, a DU round of that size would be much heavier.

http://www.newsobserver.com/167/story/495141.html
Chemical plant had been there for years and residential neighborhoods had grown up around it without anyone really knowing what it was ...
until it blew up.

Apparently the most famous Hercules Powder Plant explosion took place in New Jersey in 1940. And it seems Hercules Powder had plants all over the US.
I found references to plants in California, Kansas and Hattiesburg MS as well as the one that blew up in NJ.
I even found something that wraps back to photography ... images from the power plant at the Hercules California plant:

It's some really interesting work.

They've improved a lot over the decades. The book underneath shows a picture of the moon similar to crude ones I worked on in the 70's in the early days of digital imaging.
I was looking to remind viewers of the intro to Star Wars where the printing scrolls off into space. Certainly another fetish, but oh so last century.
As usual, it was an amusing challenge to get my concept to some out something like I imagined it.
Thanks for the complement and the gift grade!
Cheers, DuncanC

I could not help thinking that you should have lined up the iPod with Jupiter and its moons in a 2001 style.

Thanks for the comments Kinon, I pretty much agree.

You're waaaay to generous with your 'grade' on my submission. I agree with your comments about the poor technical quality and lack of 21st century content. Not only that, but it seems to me that a true lens fetish ought to require a 500mm focal length or longer. ;) The history of this shot is that I had just returned from 3 weeks 'on the road'. When I checked the 21st Century Fetish page, Jim had already posted the first 5 images. Decision time! Should I submit or not? OK. Grab the camera, run to the bathroom mirror and click. Hand-held (no time to mess with a tripod) so the camera wasn't square to the plane of the mirror, 3200 ISO due to poor lighting, etc., etc. Five minutes later, off goes my emailed submission. "B-" you say? "Heck yea! I'll take it!" :)
BTW, I had never before taken a close-up photo of a lens using that same lens. I was expecting to see the 20D sensor in the middle of this image but I guess the reflection of me from the lens or sensor IR filter overpowered the actual sensor image. Besides that, my reflection is sideways because the image should be rotated 90 deg clockwise to match the orientation of the camera. I told you I did this in a hurry! :)

Being the sharpness freak, I'd like a sharper pic, but this > isn't bad. A- Thank you for taking a look and for your comments. I've been lurking SI for a while now, and just never got the nerve or the time to submit, so this is my first. I got this new iPod right as the Fetish mandate was posted, and it seemed so obvious that I was pretty sure my subject wouldn't be unique. I agree with the sharpness comment. I'm still really having a difficult time with DOF using the extension tubes. Of the 37 exposures I shot, this was the best combination of lighting and sharpness, such as it is. Coveting one of the Tak macro lenses... I bought the Spotmatic (my first SLR) a couple of years ago, purposefully going the old-skool route so that I would force myself to learn. I don't know about the learning, but between the camera and the darkroom, I'm having a blast.
Cheers,
Paul
