Minolta XG-9 issue

I picked up a Minolta XG-9 at the local flea market for a song today
with 200X flash.
The camera is in excellent working condition except for one issue.
With the flash attached and turned on the shutter stays open till the
flash is turned off. Thinking it may be the flash I tried my 320X
flash with the same results. Both flashes work fine on my XD-11.
I then tried a Vivitar 283 flash and the camera worked fine. In other
words the camera refuses to work with a dedicated flash but will work
fine with a non-dedicated flash.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem??

Start by finding out the exact difference between the dedicated and
non-dedicated flash units....What is the advantage of using the Minolta
flash units?  Whatever this feature is, it is responsible for creating the
problem.

The difference is in the case of the Minolta X-series (XG, XD) cameras
the hot shoe and flash has a second contact which tells the camera to
set the shutter speed to 1/60th flash sync speed which it is doing
that based on the 1/60th LED blinking in the viewfinder as it should..

Well, apparently, this automatic 1/60th setting feature is not working
properly....you could varnish over that contact with an insulating paint,
and set the camera to 1/60th manually whenever you use the flash,
perhaps......As I say, I am not familiar with that camera model....I only
have a Nikon.

That doesn't fix the problem.
Since this is an electronic camera it could lead to more problems if
it isn't fixed properly.

Agreed....At this point, I would take it to a good camera repair shop,
rather than try to fix it myself. - I wouldn't even know how to get into the
electronics of any camera I own. (although I would be interested in watching
how a repairman does it.)

Wild guess here, but having a 3rd contact on the hot shoe doesn't guarantee
it has TTL  I think the X-570/700 do and X370 doesn't,  but the XGs don't.
I think there should be a way to shut down the TTL to Auto. and still have
the 3rd contact set the shutter to 1/60. It's still a guess. I'd try putting
the PC cord into the socket and see what happens. If it works, then a piece
of scotch tape in the shoe should do it.  Bob Hickey

The XG9 isn't TTL flash capable. It can be set to 1/60th manually so it is
useable with whatever flash will fit the shoe, as others have said, cover the
3rd contact.

There is no third contact on this camera. Just 2..

One contact is the metal shoe itself, the side panels of the shoe that form the
shoe are the ground in the electrical system.

This model only has 2 contacts. One is the usual center contact while
the other one sets the cameras shutter speed to 1/60th flash sync.
