Hi.  I recently purchased a lightly used Vivatar Vivicam 3615
camera.  According to the manual, all I need to do to upload the
pictures to my PC is to connect the camera.  This is for Windows2000
and XP, and I have done this on both.  However, of the several
computers I have tried this on, I consistently receive an unrecognized
USB device error.  I have been unable to locate a driver for the
camera online, and the Vivitar web site doesn't seem to have a
customer support option from what I'm able to discern.  Does anyone
have any ideas that might help?  Thanks

What support that can be found is here.

That camera is not supposed to require a driver on Windows XP or Windows
2000.
You should check your USB system on your computer.

If you have not upgraded your XP computer to SP2, you should do so.

Have you read the instructions on how to transfer images to your computer?

Downloading Images

1. Plug one end of USB to computer.

2. Power on the camera.

3. Switch the Mode Dial to Computer mode .

4. Plug the other end of USB to the camera.

5. Double-click My Computer icon on the desktop and find the Removable Disk.

6. Drag and drop the images in the removable disk mentioned above to the
folder in your hard disk.

7. Once the copy process has been completed, the images then successfully
have downloaded from the camera to your computer.

I have followed the instructions in the manual to the letter,
and I do have SP2.  I have downloaded the drivers from Vivitar, and I
have tried to install them for the unknown device under "unknown
device" under the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in the Device
Manager.  I have also uninstalled the unknown device and clicked "add
new hardware" to install the drivers.  However, XP tells me that these
drivers will not work for this device and refuses to install the
drivers.  From some of the info I've been able to glean from the
internet, the problem has more to do with the USB port drivers.  I
consistently get the "USB device not recognized" message and a ballon
popup that tells me that the device connected to the system has
malfunctioned.  Everything I have tried simply will not work.  I'm at
my wit's end.  (I have even tried to find generic USB mass storage
drivers for XP, which is apparently what I need, on the internet with
no luck!)

Do this to restore the USB drivers. I assume that you have USB 2.0.
If you do not have USB 2.0, the controller will not say "enhanced".

Right Click My Computer, Properties. Hardware tab. Click Device Manager
button. Click the plus(+) sign beside Universal Serial Buss controllers.

Right Click Enhanced Host Controller (it is the USB 2.0 controller)
Uninstall. Close the device manager, Reboot computer.

Let XP install new hardware. (give it a few seconds after reboot) It takes
XP some time to locate the driver.

You will have a fresh USB driver. (It comes from the Windows XP cache of the
original files).

    I'll try this.  Thank-you.
