Can anyone please advise me on the the following problem.

We've just got a new Praktica-Pentacon DCZ 5.2 mega-pixel camera.

I've loaded the software disc, as per instructions, with no apparent
problems.  It's loaded 2 "Ulead" progs (Ulead Photo Explorer 8.0 basic &
Ulead Video Studio 7.0 basic) ..... don't know if it has installed any
drivers
or software relating to the camera's operation.

I'm using Windows XP.  When I connect the camera (as instructed) to the PC,
via the USB port lead, I get (on the camera screen) the message "connected
to
computer", once the camera is turned on.  Everything looking good, 'TIL the
next step.

Here's where something is going wrong .......

A message appears on my desktop  "Windows has detected a new USB hardware
storage device" ( my camera, obviously) .... but, when I click on the
message bubble
it turns-off & restarts the PC.   Usually, when I click on similar message
bubbles, the
hardware device in question is then installed.

I've tried using other, different USB ports on my PC ... after UNinstalling
& re-installing
the software CD, to no avail.  I really haven't got a clue what's going
wrong.
We have some pics. already now, on the camera, but cannot transfer them to
the PC ...
as the camera (once connected to the PC & turned on) keeps shutting down &
restarting
the PC.

Any advice / information GREATLY appreciated.

Many thanks in advance, for ANY positive feedback !

Cheers.

This is the info I found.

The PDF file indicates that the CD has drivers for Windows XP on it.

Look at the folders on the CD and see if there is a USB driver.

Massive thanks to you , CSM1,  for your time & feedback.

Unfortunately, the software CD that comes with this particular camera
( Praktica DCZ 5.2)  only installs the Ulead (photo & video) progs. The
"install drivers" option (CD) will not highlight, on my PC.  The VERY
small info booklet, that comes with the camera, does say that "drivers are
only required & installed with windows 98 systems".

I've found a link to the Pentacon (German) site .... & (very strangely !!)
you
can submit an enquiry about the camera, ONLY if you are NOT British !!
.... I am.

You have to fill in all the address fields, including which country you are
e-mailing from.  Mongolia .... Namibia .... Greenland etc ... are fine.
There
are hundreds of countries listed, including all the big ones ... America,
Australia, Canada etc...

UK, Great Britain & England appear to be exempt !       Very strange ?!!

Thanks anyway !

I assume you went to this site:
http://www.praktica.de/index.php?iL=2&iO=0&iM=13&iSM=18.

In the list of countries you will find 'Grossbrittanien' which I think
you'll find means 'Great Britain'!

The no driver needed bit is sorta true if the camera meets the usb standard
for a generic storage device. If it does, it should show up as a generic USD
drive with a drive letter assigned. When all else fails, a memory card
reader/adapter may be the simplest way out. Besides, use of one does not
drain the camera battery. I did have similar problems, until I was able to
update an inf file from the Camera Mfr that had entries for the specific
camera model I have. Now the Mfr is back to a "generic" install for most of
their camera models.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the USB controller and port drivers may or may
not help.

I presume that you mean that the computer reboots when you say "it turns-off
& restarts the PC".

That sounds like there is a glitch in your Windows Registry.

Unfortunately there is no way that you can fix such a glitch (if there is
one) yourself.

There are a few tools to correct problems in the Registry.  The only one I
would recommend is Registry Mechanic from PC Tools.

http://www.pctools.com/

The programme can be downloaded from this site and the licence fee is about
USD30.00.

As you have already pointed out, the drivers on the CD are for Windows 98
systems only.

Windows XP should automatically recognise any USB camera when it is
connected and install any USB drivers if required.

The ULead software has nothing to do with Win XP recognising the camera.

With my own camera, I just hook it up and use a "file manager" to transfer
the files to the computer, just as if the camera is another hard disk or
drive.

That is the way your system should work.

You could try Start/System/Add Hardware but if the registry does have a
glitch then I doubt it will work.

Thanks Ross.

I can see myself, probably, just backing up my files & re-formatting the PC.
I once had a "malicious spyware" item on the machine, that even my updated
Norton couldn't shift .... re-formatting took care of that prob.

thanks again, anyway.

just a long shut but...did you try just plug the camera in (when PC already
running) and wait until is installed and not clicking that message bubble.
Just wait until that "new hardware" icon in the tray dissapears.
you can also try control panel/advanced/ boot and restore settings and
uncheck "reboot automatically" (words can somewhat differ since i translate
from local language)

FWIW before going to the trouble of re-formatting and re installing
why not invest a few dollars/pounds? on a usb card reader. Plug
in to the usb port - plug in the CF card and download your pics. that
way.

hth

TBH  I've never heard of a "usb card reader".
I'll have a look around our local PC accessory
shop & ask if they stock them.

Cheers.

Newegg.com has tons of them, search for "usb card reader" without the
quotes.

Here is one that will probably fit whatever memory card your camera has.

You might try a powered USB hub.
In any event, if the camera has a removable memory card, a card reader is
usually a better solution, due to download speed and camera battery life.
Many of the current crop of inkjet printers have a built in card slot or
slots.
