Ugly Cameras

Hi Folks,

Sorry to just complain, but I've been looking for a new digital camera for
my family (anywhere under $700) and I can't believe the complete lack of
aesthetic consideration in today's cameras.  It seems like every
manufacturer is making these cheap plastic cameras that look like they were
assembled with spare parts from radio shack.  I see none of the
ergodynamics, smooth curves or rubberized edges that were made just a few
years ago.  Everything looks like a plain silver, square plastic box - as
though it was cobbled together in someone's garage.

Am I the only one who yearns for a camera that looks good - besides having
the right features and picture quality?

OK - I'm finished now.  Sorry ;-)

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.

You're right.  It just seems that there is a general trend in consumer
electronics toward a thin, plasticized fake metal look.  Even car dashboards
are going that way.  I guess I'll just have to wait until the style goes
back to a more organic look.

Your taste is all in your mouth.

It's a trend with some manufacturers more than others.  Fuji etc
P&S's all look like cheap plastic toys, while others (e.g. Canon)
at least look like metal.  We get compliments all the time on our
S1 IS and Sony F-717.

Yes - those 2 cameras do look very nice. Thanks for pointing those out :-)

I mostly agree, but go play with the Sony F717 (already mentioned),
Sony F828 (now that is a tank!), and the almost as solid Olympus C8080.

These just happen to be the only prosumers I've owned, or cared to own..

NO!
I just want to say YES!!  Thank heaven there's SOMEBODY left out there
with some taste.  If you look at ALL the modern electronics (and many many
cars) they all look like complete sh.t!
It seems that the only crayon left in their boxes is silver too.
What happened to cameras and electronics components (like VCRs, amps, etc)
being BLACK!!???  You can't find it to save your life now, unless you want
to go for big $ SLRs - but I suspect they will soon all befall the same
fate as well.

And you're absolutely right about the shape too.  Perfectly flat, nothing
to grip onto.  I don't need or want rubberized, but just some grip spots.
And don't make the thing as heavy as a brick!
Who cares if it's super small if it's so heavy it'll pull your pants to
your ankles if you put it in your pocket!

I suppose we should be careful what we wish for though, or they'll read
this, bastardize it, and turn out cameras that look like that Sony zoom
monstrosity or the new PT Cruiser SUV :(

And what's with all the camera cell phones with NO FLASH?!
USELESS!  99.9% of the time I'd ever use one for a quick snap I'd be
inside at night.

No worries, I feel ya :)
